The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

We all know about Tolkien and Lewis, so let's discuss other gems from Christian sci-fi, fantasy, horror, etc.

One work that I haven't seen discussed much here is The Book Of The New Sun, a four-book series by Catholic writer Gene Wolf. It's considered one of the masterpieces of science-fiction literature and is focused on the Christ-like executioner Severian.

Book of the New Sun is weird and hard to get into. I enjoyed Wolfe's Wizard/Knight more.

Check out George Macdonald :

Yes and he's also very enlightening and had a big influence on CS Lewis. Check out his book "Unspoken Sermons"

The odd thing about Macdonald is that even though he was a Scottish Congregationalist, his theology bears a striking similarity, at times to Eastern Orthodoxy, which was completely accidental. A rare case where an individual's innovations brings him closer to tradition (although he was heretical on other counts).

I'm pretty sure he was a Unitarian, or at least had non-trinitarian leanings

I enjoyed The Book of the New Sun, but I was a bit disappointed when it was revealed that most of the supernatural stuff was due to sufficiently advanced aliens.

I quite like George Macdonald's childrens stories. The Princess and the Goblins, The Princess and Curdie, and The Romance of Photogen and Nycteris are all good.

The Mote in God's Eye has humanity united under a Russian Orthodox space empire. Not sure if either of the authors were Christian, but I suspect Jerry Pournelle was.

Nope, wrong. He as a calvinist, I checked it. He believed in universal salvation though (perhaps you've mistaken it with unitarianism) which makes me to believe that he did have certain Orthodox influence

Orthodox space empire sounds pretty badass, going to pick this up.

The two authors Niven and Pournelle have also written two explicitly Christian-themed novels, Inferno and decades later the sequel Escape from Hell. I have read neither, but from what I've heard, they seem to take updating Dante to feature modern famous figures non-blasphemously.

Reading this at the moment and it has a lot of good humour and prose. Do check it out.

I'll be honest, as a Chrisitan I think Christian horror sucks more often than not. It's too hopeful for horror. Christianity fits better for other genres, od a Christian writer writes a horror he should write it from a non-christian perspective, portraying horrors of the world without God.

>Christ-like executioner

There's something … alarmingly … antithetical in that sentence …

55ece4 No.675059

From revelations 19:

19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

To be a good executioner requires a lot of humility and forgivingness. For a long time being an executioner was considered to be an occupation for the lowest-of-the-low, causing a caste-like system to form in which the sons of executioner were themselves forced to become executioners. Christ-like executioners were a real thing.
