The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Why are protestants so obsessed with making Jesus look like a blissful model, whereas Orthodox and Catholic artists depict him as ragged, suffering, contemplative and sometimes resentful.

lol okay.. what a crappy pointless flamebait thread.

Modern protestantism has lost the fear of God, meaning they have lost the beginning of wisdom. They can't picture a God that is wrathful with them because they don't see a direct correlation between their sins and their damnation; everything is either a reflection of their faith or a complete non-consequence because of OSAS nonsense. Their Christ is not one of absolute justice. That being said this is not at all a hard and fast rule, and this is a flamebait thread.

Cultural decay, when looks in men become more valued than virtues. I don't think it's exclusive to any one religion or culture.

Because Apostolics know life isn't all fun and games.

I might be wrong but I don't think that Orthodox icons depict Christ as ragged or contemplative. When He is suffering (as on the cross), the icons depict Him as victorious in His suffering. When Christ is only suffering, then this is a Catholic/Western sensualism. Christ is a king and He has the right to be both resentful and merciful.

This is because Catholics have changed their theory of atonement to satisfaction, instead of the original Christus Victor which is still the Orthodox way.
