The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

What's the Oriental Orthodox claim to being the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church™?

640e76 No.660518

Founded by Peter in Antioch. As Vatican 1 dictates, they too are the heirs to Peter.

Adherence to their tradition, which they claim Chalcedon contradicts. Notably, Cyril of Alexandria's Christology. They consider Pope Leo's Christology to be heretical and Nestorian.

I've always wondered this, but how do Catholics and Eastern Orthodox reconcile Chalcedonian theology with St. Cyril of Alexandria's teachings? What do Catholics disagree with Orientals about St. Cyril?

St. Cyril is doctor of Church and his writings are dogmatic part of Council's teaching. Problem happened when it comes to difference between "mono-" and "mia-". However, there are some documents written by Copts and Catholics in which we anathematise both Nestorius and Eutyches.

tigga, if I created my own schismatic or heretic church I would say it is the true original one.

Everyone do that.

Reason for rejecting Chalcedon:

>Chalcedon is anathematised because the members of the council contradicted the faith of Nicaea, introducing a different nature into the Trinity by proposing a fourth hypostasis.

>Chalcedon is anathematised because it has trampled under foot the canons and prescriptions of the Fathers.

>Chalcedon is anathematised because the teachings which were established there have overturned the teachings of the council of Ephesus, and in making a new definition of the faith the council has fallen under the anathemas issued at Ephesus.

>Chalcedon is anathematised because it has corrupted the patristic doctrine and has received the Tome of Leo.

>Chalcedon is anathematised because it has accepted the communion of the partisans of Nestorius, such as Ibas.

>Chalcedon is anathematised because in conformity with the doctrine of Nestorius the members of the council have distinguished two natures in Christ, separated into their proprieties; and they have offered Christ two adorations, calling one God and the other man.

For context of the anathemas see article: http://britishorthodox.org/glastonburyreview/issue-112-the-oriental-orthodox-rejection-of-chalcedon/

>The British Orthodox Church is a small autonomous Orthodox jurisdiction, originally deriving from the Syrian Orthodox Church. It was canonically part of the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria from 1994-2015, before amicably returning to its original status in order to fulfil its mission more effectively.

The article was written when the 'British Orthodox Church' was under the Coptic Patriarchate of Alexandria and the Priest who wrote it (Peter Farrington) left the church when it became a Independent Church sometime in or after 2015, he remaining under the Coptic Patriarchate of Alexandria so he should be a good representative of the Coptic church not a random independent one.

>Chalcedon is anathematised because the members of the council contradicted the faith of Nicaea, introducing a different nature into the Trinity by proposing a fourth hypostasis.

The letters of Cyril were read at the Council, and they repeatedly affirm that Christ is a single person (hypostasis) and the Council confirms these letters and multiple times reaffirms Christ to be one hypostasis. There is no fourth hypostasis introduced. It's like you read nothing of the Council itself.

"After the reading of the foregoing epistle, the most reverend bishops cried out: This is the faith of the fathers, this is the faith of the Apostles. So we all believe, thus the orthodox believe. Anathema to him who does not thus believe. Peter has spoken thus through Leo. So taught the Apostles. Piously and truly did Leo teach, so taught Cyril. Everlasting be the memory of Cyril. Leo and Cyril taught the same thing, anathema to him who does not so believe. This is the true faith. Those of us who are orthodox thus believe. This is the faith of the fathers." - Session II, Council of Chalcedon

>Chalcedon is anathematised because it has trampled under foot the canons and prescriptions of the Fathers.

Evidence needed.

>Chalcedon is anathematised because the teachings which were established there have overturned the teachings of the council of Ephesus, and in making a new definition of the faith the council has fallen under the anathemas issued at Ephesus.

Evidence needed.

>Chalcedon is anathematised because it has corrupted the patristic doctrine and has received the Tome of Leo.

Literally what is wrong with the Tome of Leo? There's is nothing in it that is objectionable. Literally Leo writes:

"So the proper character of both natures was maintained and came together in a single person."

>Chalcedon is anathematised because it has accepted the communion of the partisans of Nestorius, such as Ibas.

Ibas recanted of his heresies an anathematized Nestorius numerous times. The heretical and illegitimate Second Council of Ephesus wrongly accused him of many things. His original letter which did become apart of the Three Chapters was anathematized as the Second Council of Constantinople.

>Chalcedon is anathematised because in conformity with the doctrine of Nestorius the members of the council have distinguished two natures in Christ, separated into their proprieties;

Blasphemy. You deny Christ is was a full human being, then how can you believe in the atonement? If Christ did not become a human being then there is no salvation. You are contradicting the witness of fathers like Athanasius of Alexandria who explicitly says,

"For He [the Word] was made a man that we might be made God." (On the Incarnation)

>and they have offered Christ two adorations, calling one God and the other man.

Wrong. We offer Christ one adoration because of his ==ONE PERSON== which unites the two natures. There is one single adoration for there is one single Christ.

Now, for anathemas against the so called Oriental "Orthodox".

>If anyone shall not confess that the Word of God has two nativities, the one from all eternity of the Father, without time and without body; the other in these last days, coming down from heaven and being made flesh of the holy and glorious Mary, Mother of God and always a virgin, and born of her: let him be anathema. - Second Council of Constantinople

>If anyone uses the expression of two natures, confessing that a union was made of the Godhead and of the humanity, or the expression the one nature made flesh of God the Word, and shall not so understand those expressions as the holy Fathers have taught, to wit: that of the divine and human nature there was made an hypostatic union, whereof is one Christ; but from these expressions shall try to introduce one nature or substance [made by a mixture] of the Godhead and manhood of Christ; let him be anathema. For in teaching that the only-begotten Word was united hypostatically [to humanity] we do not mean to say that there was made a mutual confusion of natures, but rather each [nature] remaining what it was, we understand that the Word was united to the flesh. Wherefore there is one Christ, both God and man, consubstantial with the Father as touching his Godhead, and consubstantial with us as touching his manhood. Therefore they are equally condemned and anathematized by the Church of God, who divide or part the mystery of the divine dispensation of Christ, or who introduce confusion into that mystery." - Second Council of Constantinople

>"If anyone shall take the expression, Christ ought to be worshipped in his two natures, in the sense that he wishes to introduce thus two adorations, the one in special relation to God the Word and the other as pertaining to the man; or if anyone to get rid of the flesh, [that is of the humanity of Christ,] or to mix together the divinity and the humanity, shall speak monstrously of one only nature or essence (φύσιν ἤγουν οὐσίαν) of the united (natures), and so worship Christ, and does not venerate, by one adoration, God the Word made man, together with his flesh, as the Holy Church has taught from the beginning: let him be anathema." - Second Council of Constantinople

>If anyone does not anathematize Arius, Eunomius, Macedonius, Apollinaris, Nestorius, Eutyches and Origen, as well as their impious writings, as also all other heretics already condemned and anathematized by the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, and by the aforesaid four Holy Synods and [if anyone does not equally anathematize] all those who have held and hold or who in their impiety persist in holding to the end the same opinion as those heretics just mentioned: let him be anathema. - Second Council of Constantinople

This is the faith of the 318 fathers, anyone who does not confess it does not belong to One, Holy, Catholic, and Orthodox Church. Let him stand condemned.
