The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

There's already a thread vaguely similar to this one, but it would just be necrobumping.

Anyways, has anyone here been brought up in the Church of Christ (CoC) or are Church of Christ? If so, what's it like? What are the people like in and out of the church? I find it as the most appealing "denomination" or in a way "sect" (without the negative connotation, referring to an offshoot) or the Protestant movement.

I've heard it's quite conservative and that its membership, unlike most Protestant denominations, is not declining and literally dying of old age, but actually growing. Depending on the congregation, it seems they're quite restrictive and that they take what their Scripture (mostly the NT) very seriously in day to day life. They're pious to their framework.

What are your thoughts on them, even from an ecumenical perspective if you tend to know something about them or if you were raised as one. They're similar to Baptists at first glance, but theologically, not at all. They do seem to prefer the KJV over all other versions of the Bible though

Note: They're not Mormons (obviously), Christian Scientists or United Church of Christ. You can usually distinguish a Church of Christ

wew, forgot to comment on the last part. damn chronic fatigue.

You can usually distinguish a CoC from an ICoC because the latter has sodomite flags hanging outside their """"churches"""""

Oh wow, I found two of those in my city (at a decent distance). There's about 10 in the whole metropolitan area. Wow.

Arguing over a capella is Phariseeical. Look for a continuity with the historic c/Church.

They are nice tho

Well, if the people in the church all have pretty white smiles and dress in neat suits and have enough money to afford spacious houses and have good jobs and healthy kids, what do you think.

I personally would absolutely refuse to let any of my siblings or friends even think about entering in any way shape or form, this isn't Gods church.

They're not wealthy, though, they're middle class usually and most just finished high school only

Well if you're considering entering any of their buildings, then at least talk to as many of them beforehand as you can to get a feel for what their outlook is on life and what they expect from their future. If you get any uneasy feelings then run immediately, because not every church worships God.

I was involved with them for only a short time. They were a little kooky at times and seem to think they're the restoration of the 1st century Church but overall were doctrinally sound. All were Trinitarians, and they held to some standard Protestant doctrines like Sola Scriptura. They also believed in baptismal regeneration but did not baptize babies.

I converted to Catholicism a little over a year ago, my grandma is CoC and she is a very sweet lady but of course disagrees with my decision. I've been to her church many times growing up and it is conservative with nice people, but that's about it. They're theologically bankrupt and are very scrupulous about mediocre things such as music with no instruments and alcohol. They have the generic "Lord's Supper" with crackers and juice and a very low church kind of structure centered around a sermon from the pastor.

Overall I think they're one of the more sincere protestant groups out there, but that could depend case by case since they're all independent. My grandma tells me they have more young families with kids running around which she loves, so maybe they are growing.

I was born into and raised in the CoC. I'm Orthodox now, but I still sort of like to CoC. Some of the people in it are real shitbags, but others are very good people. Too legalistic, there's no consistency between congregations and they tend to have a holier-than-thou-jerk attitude anytime you talk about religion with them. But as far as protestant denominations go, they are easily one of the best IMO because they do actually follow the scriptures as close as they can. Sola scriptura but not sola fide. Political orientation varies widely but there's a slight lean to the right even if boomer conservatism is the furthest they'll go.

tl:dr they're alright I guess but begome ordodox
