I'm about to have my first child and have pretty similar views about rasing children. No screen time, girls in skirts and modest wear, strict rules, lots of family time, girls doing cleaning and boys doing manual work and all kids having required chores and helping out the family. But it seems their kids have started rebelling from them.

Where did they go wrong? Was it the cameras or is there something Bill Gothard teaches that is left out?

From a non denominational viewpoint - their extreme authoritarianism and inflexibility. Another thing worth remembering is that not all men are up to the task of running a large family and patriarchy doesn't work when the patriachs dont.

Not to mention the kind of cult of personality which just ruins everything.

The major problem is such constricting family life does lead to rebellion, just as you said. Also they are part of a freaky cult.

I prefer if you're going to go down that road, the Amish idea that you send them out into the world, to experience it alone. Because youths rebel, but pretty soon you realize why your parents had their beliefs, even if you disagree in the end.
