The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Who are the gods in Psalm 82? I've heard three different answers

1. They're fallen angels

2. They're humans

3. They're the divine council of El from Canaanite mythology.

Apparently answer number 3 is held by scholars. What does /christian/ believe is the proper interpretation of this?

i lean towards a combination of 1 and 3, since Genesis 6 and other passages say that the false gods of the heathens are demons in disguise (Deut 32:16-17).

Footnote from the Orthodox Study Bible:

>Ps 81 reveals Christ God as present and judging in the midst of His Church (v. 1). This prophesy calls church members gods, which is the same thing as calling them sons of the Most High (vv. 1, 6). For they were made gods and the sons of God by the new birth in baptism. However, these gods are warned by their God to take care of the poor and needy (vv. 2-7). For Christ rose from the dead (v. 8), and "He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead" (Creed).

Let's let Jesus speak

<Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?

The "gods" are unrighteous judges who on account of their power as magistrates are called gods (Exodus 7:1). This is why He says "But ye shall die like men, and fall like one of the princes", He reminds them that though they are called gods, and they even seem to think it, they are but mere men, and shall suffer the recompense of their error.

Pointed out

Yes yes, the """scholars""" who will do anything to connect old testament to paganism. At this point, whenever I see scholar, near the word bible, I automatically discard it as trash.

It's either >>650770, or the beginning of rebellion amongst the heavenly host. It's not the clearest passage.

>At this point, whenever I see scholar, near the word bible, I automatically discard it as trash.

Same. Most of the time it seems they contradict the Bible purely for the sake of being contrarian.
