For the 29th year in a row, volunteers from around the country are participating in a 90-hour Bible-reading “marathon” at the West Front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The U.S. Capitol Bible Reading Marathon, led by The Bible Foundation’s directors Rev. Michael Hall and Terry Shaffer Hall, began at 6 p.m. EDT Sunday and will wrap up at 11 a.m. Thursday. In the meantime, the hundreds of volunteers reading from the Bible will come from a diverse array of Christian denominations and cultures. The annual event was launched in 1990 by Dr. John Hash and Dr. Corinthia Boone as a means to bring hundreds of believers to our nation’s capital to read from the Word of God. The Bible Foundation lists the following reasons for continuing the yearly tradition:
• to honor God’s Holy Word;
• to celebrate our First Amendment-protected freedoms of speech, assembly, and religion; and
• to set aside denominational differences and unifty the Body of Christ around the Holy Bible.
It has been a powerful lead-in to the National Day of Prayer every year since. The Bible Foundation also plans to hold a prayer vigil Thursday following the National Day of Prayer service in our nation’s capital. This year’s prayer vigil will be held Thursday from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. EDT.
