Why do people say that Christianity held back scientific progress hundreds of years when there are whole regions of the planet that's not western Europe? Are they subconsciously saying that only Whites are able to drive scientific progress?

I do work with behavioral genetics and inevitably get asked how I can believe in God quite often. I always ask them how they can do this kind of stuff and not. I usually end up outing them as embarrassed theists by walking them backwards from there.
