If the intent is to deceive, then yes it is sinful. If the intent is to make a mocking caricature that no reasonable person could be deceived by, then it’s probably not sinful, or at least not as sinful.

If it's the former however, I'm not sure I would so hastily call it sinful. In WWII, the British had entirely fake mock-ups of whole battalions made near the pas de callais to fool the Germans. The point isn't to take moral sides in the war, but certainly the British had a duty to defend their country, and the intent was certainly to deceive the enemy, but who would call this tactic sinful? If it is to thwart the wicked, isn't well-intentioned deceit a justifiable or necessary evil?

Islam aims to make credulous people the slaves of the devil, that's far more dire than the bombing of London. They'll certainly lie to damage Christendom in others' eyes, how do we owe them this when they certainly wouldn't reciprocate, any more than Churchill owed Hitler 'honesty'?

Part of the reason that Christianity is better than Islam is that Christianity teaches we should always do the right thing, not that we can gain advantage over our enemies by any means necessary. We cannot do evil to bring about a good effect.

To answer your other question, not all forms of deception are always wrong. For example, the doctrine of mental reservation holds that it's permissable to state a truth that you believe will be misunderstood if the circumstances demand it. In the example you cited, it's not a lie or a truth. It's just a model batallion, and the Germans (uninvited) can do whatever they want when they encounter.

In OP's example, LARPing as someone from another religion, not only is he lying about what he believes, but since he's not actually a member of the other religion, even if he's trying to represent the other religion, chances are he's doing so very badly.
