Then, with no warning and a sharp twist, I’m in a headlock. My neck cracks. I yelp and he lets go with a howl before falling about in gleeful laughter at the success of his joke. >Does the EU know and approve of the price that Mt Athos is paying in return for Russian money?
This is a serious issue right now, not just ecclesiastically but politically.
Even going a bit beyond the "le ebul russian gommies" meme which has been reheated recently, the Russian church is trying pretty hard to muscle in on Mt Athos and perhaps even to co-opt it for political leverage.
Back in the early part of the 20th century (I think) Tsar Nicholas II asked if it would be OK to send some monks down there to represent both Russian Orthodxy and the "Third Rome" which was accepted by Athos. The Russian monks built a monastery called St Joseph's and lived there for a while, until it turned out that the Russian monks were naval officers who were casing the joint for geopolitical intel and basically spying on the area, so they were kicked out and St Joseph's was given to other monks to use. However Patriarch Kirill, with Putin's support, now demand that Athos give the monastery back to the Russians are rightful clay, and there is a low-key ongoing feud between both the Athos monks, the Russian Church and also the Russian and Greek Governments at large over this issue.

What would you expect from one who is out of the Socialist Scotland? The Kirk of Scotland has become lost and they follow the hag Nicola Sturgeon the First Minister of Scotland (Priomh Mhinistear na h-Alba - Scottish Gaelic). She is the same as Angela Merkel, Theresa May and the looser Hillary Rodman Clinton all four of them have never had children and never will.
This American has been there we met with them, it was very educational and I respect them. We were given a tour of the place where they showed us their Holy Books and their Holy Relics. They also feed us lunch then we were blessed by their leader they also served us Ouzo during lunch. Greece was the first place I ever ate octopus, squid and the best rice pudding I have ever had. This one fell in love with Ouzo very good liquor.
I’m a Christian of the Protestant faith not a member of the Greek Orthodox Church. This one also is of Scottish DNA… family left there in the 1650s sent to the Virginia Colony by the British as punishment for being Highlanders of Scotland. Proud to say this one is still 100% European DNA and 0% non-European DNA.
We flew to Northern Greece on a military exercise with the British Army with other NATO members. We were along the northern border of Greece and we did get some down time while there. Some of us went to Mount Athos at the invitation of the Greek Military the Protos of the Church. I was stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany with the 56th S & S BN as their Unit Supply Clerk.
While there we also went to Thessaloniki on a tour. The city was named after Alexander the Great half sister Princess Thessalonike of Macedon.
