i find it easy to understand everything in the bible except when it comes to jesus' elaboration of thou shalt not murder.

he says that if someone hits your cheek then turn your other cheek so they can it that too, then he talks about if your being robbed then let them rob you and give them more then what they came to rob you for.

I find everything else in the bible to be good and practical but this really bothers me. if an evil empire from accross the sea comes to invade you and theyre set on slaughtering everyone and destroying your religon. are you suppose to defend yourself?

how does this relate to the crusades?

how does this relate to the reconquista?

how is this practical or does he just mean dont hurt your fellow man and is not talking about foreign evil

>he says that if someone hits your cheek then turn your other cheek so they can it that too, then he talks about if your being robbed then let them rob you and give them more then what they came to rob you for.

Nonviolent resistance seems like most rational interpretation of those verses.

Did you want the orthodox or catholic interpretation?

"Holy Scripture must be understood in the light of what Christ and the saints have actually practiced. Christ did not offer His other cheek, nor Paul either. Thus to interpret the injunction of the Sermon on the Mount literally is to misunderstand it. This injunction signifies rather the readiness of the soul to bear, if it be necessary, such things and worse, without bitterness against the attacker. This readiness our Lord showed, when He gave up His body to be crucified. That response of the Lord was useful, therefore, for our instruction." (In John 18, lect. 4, 2)

it's simple

the ends don't justify the means

don't seek revenge

will what is good for your friends and your enemies

be quick to forgive and settle disputes

don't hold grudges, don't brood and be resentful

there's more to life than your worldly reputation, so if someone besmirches you treat it lightly, don't freak the fuck out

be less "reactive" and quick to anger and more stoic and indomitable

self defense is fine

jesus defended the temple from filthy merchants and gave them a good whipping

All sin originates in the heart.

If your country is being attacked and your people being abused then it is right to fight for your freedom, because you fight out of love. The sin is not to fight, but to fight with hatred. If after the enemy is defeated you then begin to abuse captured soldiers, invade your enemies' land and rape and pillage to return an 'eye for an eye', then you're committing the sin of vengeance. You're going above and beyond with is necessary to stop an evil, but returning evil with evil, not evil with good. This is the meaning of 'love your enemies'.

To turn the other cheek is to forgive your brother as God forgives you. How many senseless wars and bitterness have been tearing us (supposedly "Christian" nations) apart for centuries?

>But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.

In roman times, you could only slap with your right hand, your other hand was forbiddin to touch others since you wiped your ass with it. When you slapped someone, a backhand slap means the person is below you, a palm slap means the person is on the same social level as you. So when you turn your left cheeck to them, they can only hit you with their palm, making you their equal.

The other passages reagarding "peace" are just like this, dont have time to explain all of them now

Murder is kind of boring when you can enjoy the sublime instead, isn't it? All other things aside murder is low priority, even self-defence is unimportant.

Best way I've ever seen all the "cheek this" and "beard that" passages articulated for the modern day, thanks anon
