Just some idea, since I don't really know your problem but :

I think if you're looking for peace of the heart you will only find this in God, not in vanities of this world. False goods will leave you empty (not peaceful it's just suffering since you will still want something to fulfill your heart). Monks stopped caring about everything vain and stopped passions of their body and their heart (it includes stress, anxiety,…) The secular life is shit, it was always the christian teaching, it's nothing compared to the infinite peace the soul want, God. In fact the christian's vocation is to be assumed by God, to participate to Him, characterized by his immuability, unlike creatures.
Monks are the people the more close to rivendell's elves I have seen in my life.
