Pic unrelated and maybe this doesnt need to be a separate thread, but

whats the difference between magic and science?

Whats the difference between magic stick shooting fire and a musket?

It may seem a stupid thread but this question was in my head for long time now.

essentially nothing. With science you know the causes of physical phenomena. But in last analysis everything is arbitrary (that piece of matter reacts with another configuration of energy and causes x). In an endless chain of causation. Everything is behind another "because". With magic you don't now how something works, but it works. And that's precisely what science tries to discover (it's impossible).

You are living in a flying rock and communicating with photons with another collective of electrochemical cells. Magic.

Assuming one is using "magic" to mean "supernatural phenomena that is not caused by God or His will," magic is something caused by demons, but science is caused by humans. You shouldn't be controlled by or devoted to anything other than God, and that includes science, so even though science is useful, you shouldn't obsess over it (being well-rounded is good for you anyway, if you obsessed over anything but God, you'd end up as a sperg).

But what do I know about science? I'm trying to earn a B. A. degree right now in Computer Science.

Depends what you mean by "magic". A standard definition would include practices aimed at influencing the mind and altering the consciousness of yourself and others. The modern inheritance of this practice can be found in advertising and propaganda.

Ok, it seems that I've got carried away with modern day popular depiction of magic in popular culture. I've reviewed definition of magic after your post and you were correct about that. What I thought that represented "magic" is definitely science.

As I said, it was a stupid question that resolved quickly. Thanks for your replies, everyone.

Ironic that most hardcore anti-superstitious types treat science as a religion, as a sort of all-knowing entity that will reveal the answers to LUE to its prophets the scientists. Note how hard they thump studies and sources unquestioningly. Very unreasonable and illogical of them.
