There are two kinds of suffering: Suffering caused by nature such as illness or natural disasters, and suffering caused by fellow humans.
Suffering caused by nature is simply a side effect of a coherent universe. The same laws of nature that cause disasters and disease make physical life possible in the first place. A coherent universe is necessary in order for sentient beings to act in a meaningful way, since there would be no way for them to predict the results of their actions in an incoherent universe.
The second kind of suffering is necessary since removing it would remove any meaning from the actions of your fellow man, and also from your own. If doing the wrong thing has no consequence, then doing the wrong thing or the right thing becomes meaningless.
Besides, the physical world is only one part of creation. What happens to you in the next is up to you, thanks to the grace of God.
