I'm going to confession for Lent, and I have some really bad sins. Don't give me that

>the priest has heard it all

because he probably doesn't hear the things I'm gonna tell him. Some are rather specific. I am really scared guys… Really scared……. I hope I don't bail at the last second like what happened a few times before…

Just go. I went to a confession for the first time in 10+ years last year and it was one the the best things I've ever done. It's hard but it's the right thing to do and you'll feel the graces of God like never before.

I don't want the priest to think I'm morally contemptible…

>Margaret Mary Alacoque claimed to have seen a vision of Jesus Christ, and went to Father Claude to talk about it

>He was skeptical, to say the least. But after a long weary conversation, he decided he just needed to verify that it was Jesus, so he gave her a test

>”The next time you see him, ask him what my sins were the last time I was in confession”

>So she leaves, and returns later

>”Did Jesus appear to you again?”

>”Yes”

>”Did you ask him what my last confession was?”

>”Yes”

>”What did he say?”

>He said he didn’t remember”

Confession washes away sin. The priest keeps no tallies or records, nor does he think of the numerous confessions he hears daily. Confess.

All of us are sinners, including the clergy. Any good priest has the attitude of being the worst of sinners.

Go confess.

We get this same thread every couple of days, but I'll bite.

Yes, he has.

Friend as a convert in my first confession I confessed to breaking all of the commandments and pretty much every possible sin. Priests greatly respect those who are thorough and honest in their confession, at least that is what my confessor told me.

The sacramental power of confession is real and you will feel peace. It is Satan trying to stop you going. If you feel really uncomfortable then confess somewhere where the priests don't know you and it is anonymous. God bless.

Fresh convert here. So why is confessing so important and does it have to involve a preist?

It is the sacrament by which we reconcile ourselves to the Church if we have separated from her. Yes a priest is always involved.

I have to admit that when I read racy stories in the news, my mind turns to debased thoughts. Like when teacher exploits a student, or other such degeneracy. Oftentimes I will slam my hand on the desk and close the window to jolt my mind out of it. But the OP's post made me wonder: can hearing people's degeneracy have a corrupting effect on the priest? I mean combined with the celibacy, I can imagine burning with passion. Is this possibly why so many priests fall into sexual immorality and even homosexuality?

John 20:23

"23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

Jesus gives the authority to forgive sins or retain sins to his apostles. And they also had the power to transfer this power to other people.

Acts 6:17-19

Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me also this power, that any one on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

So this power remains to this day transferred from the apostles to bishops to the current priests today.
