The farewell discourse, aka John 14-17. It’s one of the most human scenes of Jesus to me. It really sounds like the sober and lengthy speech of someone who knows he is about to die. Every moment of it is reassuring and kind and just perfect. I tear up when I’m reading from John and that comes up. It’s so great

I, like you, was a former atheist.

This passage helps me when I have doubts.

<1 Corinthians 1

>19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.

>20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

>21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

>22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:

>23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

The Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

This passage spoke out to me because reading the Bible for the first time and believing in Jesus Christ meant more to me than anything in the world.

>11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

>12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

>13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

>14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean.

>15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

>16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords.

It gets me through the bad times. To me, the most powerful part of this vision is how his robe is dyed with his own blood. I can't wait to see Him in person, and I hope I can be with each and every one of you there.

For what shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

(Romans 8:29-34)

{29} "For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

{30} Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

{31} What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

{32} He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

{33} Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth.

{34} Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us."

Elijah meeting God in 1 Kings 19

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.” 8 He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God. 9 At that place he came to a cave, and spent the night there.

Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 10 He answered, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.”

11 He said, “Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 He answered, “I have been very zealous for the Lord, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away.” 15 Then the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. 16 Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. 17 Whoever escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall kill. 18 Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

Come to me, all of you who are weary and over-burdened, and I will give you rest! Put on my yoke and learn from me. For I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
