What would you do if one of your parents(in my case, my step-father) gave you the book in pic-related?

I am the only christian in my household and go to church every sunday, and one day my step-father knocked on my door and told me to read this book, I joked and said that I thought Christopher Hitchens' brother was a lot smarter but took the book anyway.

I've read through the first chapter so far, purely out of curiosity, and it's really nothing special("religion is bad becuz religious ppl did bad things!!").

Should I confront my step-father about this, and if so how? Or should I just bide my tongue and respectfully give him the book back?

0c0c3b No.598947

I remember reading this book in high school and thinking I was cool and edgy. Tell him to give you a better book, because Christopher Hitchens is high school edgelord tier atheist reading. If you need to be polite and cordial about it, suggest that he get get you a book that is actually scientific.™

Depends on your context. How old are you, how old is the step-father, what is your relationship with your step-father like, etc. With the information you gave here, it's not really enough to give you very solid advice. Is your step-father one of these nu-atheists that practically worship Hitchens, Dawkins, etc.? Then you might buy him a copy of Vox Day's "The Irrational Atheist"; it's pretty much an iconoclast for atheists. Of course, if he's like a typical Hitchens fan, he won't read the whole thing. One doesn't like to have his gods killed in such a macabre manner, after all.

Or you might just buy yourself that book, read it for yourself, and be armed with good arguments.

Just read the book to think up arguments against the ones Hitch raised.

My step dad is ethnically Jewish but is very anti-religion and pretty much an atheist as far as I'm concerned(I'm not exactly splitting hairs between believing in some vague cosmic spiritual force and an atheist). I'm 20 years old. He's a bit of a conspiracy theorist and believes a small group of people control the world(he doesn't believe it's da joos though), and his dad was a rabbi.

The relationship between us is pretty cordial, we sorta just help each other out with stuff we need but we don't really have meaningful conversations about stuff for longer than 5 minutes(mostly because his atheistic tendencies bore me and I don't really feel like debating with him.)

>tl;dr he believes all religion is evil, not really sure if he actually believes in a "god" or not(prolly not), but it definitely isn't the God of the Bible.

Was he ever into gnosticism? For some reason I've met quite a few Jews who are into conspiracy theories and gnosticism.

>>598958

No idea, I don't imagine he believes in any Christ-centered gnosticism, so the only other option would be Kaballah garbage, which I don't imagine he believes here.

As far as I can tell he doesn't really believe in the supernatural on this world, I think. He just thinks people like C. Hitchens are really smart and glories in the wisdom of men.

I would give them Peter's book in return. :D

If anything, you should sit down with your step-father and see what specific problems he has with Christianity. We can help you make any counterarguments. Based on the book that he suggested, I think he might just be severely misinformed about Christianity. I wouldn't be surprised if he had trouble articulating any concrete arguments against the faith and instead resorts to the types of arguments you see in the book, such as "religion is bad becuz religious ppl did bad things!!" If this is the case, you'll have an easier time with explaining the faith.

You're right, the book he gave you lacks any objectivity. I'd say it's very similar to "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins (which is almost considered a holy book by some atheists). It's basically a long rant.

We must also pray for your step-father, that he might be led towards Christ. Prayer is very important.

God bless you, bro.

>>598955

I'm also an ethnic Jew and I agree that secular Jews tend to be the biggest anti-theists, not just apathetic towards religion like some atheists. If you're feeling up for it, definitely sit down with him and scope out what specific issues he has with religion/Christianity.

>I would give them Peter's book in return

that would definitely be a good ice breaker, a little bit cheeky

>If anything, you should sit down with your step-father and see what specific problems he has with Christianity.

He views it as a man made thing made to control people and gain wealth, afaik. Some pseudo-Marxist stuff, probably.

How would I counter the argument that religion is man made? ie; God didn't make man, man made god

How do I show an ethnic Jew with Israeli citizenship that Jesus was the messiah? Is showing that He fulfilled the prophecies enough? It seems like a lost cause if I'm honest, there's just way too many barriers with some people to get saved.

I guess all I can do is pray though, thanks for the advice anon.

Forget the incident and profitting from spreading false testimony to whoever buys it? No, what I would do is buy the step-father a very nice, high quality KJB as a thank you and tell him just to keep it for reference. In case someone tells him a bogus quotation so he can check the Bible for himself.

Dealing with atheist parents is easy af. My dad is glad that I've converted because both my character and my life have significantly improved since then.

Hmm, the i can only tell you, what i do right now. Right now i really don't push the issue, but my experience in the past has been that of half and half. With my family half believers, and half non believers. I mean i could suggest books like C.S Lewis mere Christianity, but doesn't work if they're in the mindset like my uncle of, *you still believe in fairy tales then?* Really just depends, if they're more opened minded you might have a better shot.

Accept the gift and say thanks. Read it. Comment with him what parts you found interesting.

Later on, give him a theist book. Something soft.

>ethnically Jewish

There's your problem. He is not really against religion he is against Christianity just like how he is trained to do. I wouldn't be surprised if he pushes muh 6 gorrillon and oy vey anti-semite when he gets cornered or to get his way. Ask him about the Talmud and what it says about Jesus and then ask if that's why he hates Christianity

aac024 No.599449

>Ask him about the Talmud and what it says about Jesus and then ask if that's why he hates Christianity

The Talmud is massive and even most Rabbis never read it in its entirety. Most Jews probably aren't aware of what it says about Christ. Hating Christ just comes naturally to them.
