The Bible explicitly says that all the Canaanites weren't exterminated in the end, so the genetic analyses confirm the Bible here. The news articles from a while ago were caused by reporters having only a vague idea about what the Bible really says and uninterested in reading the entire context.

If the entire country of France was wiped off the map today, and you DNA tested a couple Germans, Brits, Italians and Spaniards in three thousand years, those people would likely share 90% genetic similarity with the French. This, if you read more into the Old Testament OP you will see Israel CONSTANTLY turning their back on God and getting punished. They would get Canaanites by trading with them and such. Look at Rome and see how foreign religions can be adopted over time.

Side Note, that part I said earlier about Israel turning on God is something I like because it disproves the "Mean Old Testament God", he fed them, led them to victory, and they still did not believe in him. Yet God would forgive them and give them another shot along with positive divine intervention.

This cycle foreshadows the Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, even more so because a few hundred years after that point most of the Babylonian Jews turned their back on God forever and made the Babylonian Talmud.

Notice how Jesus tells the Israelites to listen to the Pharisees but not to do as they do. Now the Jews message is different than what the pharisees taught. God foresaw this shift in the Jews and let them become conquered and corrupted, but not before offering them salvation first from his only Son and sacrificing him for all of mankind.
