What did he mean by this?

>The pontiff responded by saying that he doesn’t go to the doctor but to a witch.

Read in context it's a joke about his relatively good health.

"Many a true word is spoken in jest".

- Chaucer

Given his association with a pagan, ancestor worshipping monk, I find his comment concerning.

What a wicked thing to joke about.

>As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death,

>So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport?

The first guy is right about it being a joke.

Being bilingual myself and often finding myself in foreign countries, it's probably a joke that didn't translate over from the Italian or Spanish that His Holiness was speaking into English or other languages. From personal experience, I know there's often jokes or cultural references that when translated into another language are just plain awkward.

We also have to remember that Pope Francis is 81 years old.

What if he knows and intends that people will misinterpret all these statements? If he wants them to misinterpret it, is it really still a misinterpretation at that point?
