So if I befriended the next Pope some how when I’m young (say 20) and I decided to become a Catholic priest and then beame a bishop like 40 years later, would he take notice of me and make me a cardinal? As I take it, getting cardinalship seems more like nepotism than doing actual works for the Church.

Cardinals in the Roman church are political, each faction of the church pushing for various Cardinals and battling for supremacy over the Roman church.

It doesn't end there, you need to have connections in the curia and the Pope of course has to approve of you becoming a Cardinal.

If I become a priest, I'll probably be pushed off to a small rural parish.

The only good thing is that most young seminarians and priests are traditional, so the old liberal clergy will be outnumbered.
