So if I befriended the next Pope some how when I’m young (say 20) and I decided to become a Catholic priest and then beame a bishop like 40 years later, would he take notice of me and make me a cardinal? As I take it, getting cardinalship seems more like nepotism than doing actual works for the Church.

Cardinals in the Roman church are political, each faction of the church pushing for various Cardinals and battling for supremacy over the Roman church.

It's a little bit better since the Middle Ages tbf.

so to become a cardinal I would have to get recommendations from the cardinals basically who then advise the Pope on whom to cardinalize?

Yes, you would need connections within the Roman hierarchy to push for you to become a Cardinal.

It doesn't end there, you need to have connections in the curia and the Pope of course has to approve of you becoming a Cardinal.

how does one get connections in the Curia?

>>583351

yes

I know which is why befriending the Pope seems like the best idea before trying to make dealings with the Cardinals

>tfw I tend to be very traditional and I'm entering the seminary next year in an area where the bishops, archbishops and cardinals are very liberal

If I become a priest, I'll probably be pushed off to a small rural parish.

The only good thing is that most young seminarians and priests are traditional, so the old liberal clergy will be outnumbered.
