Man, people are trying really hard to look into what Francis says.

He is saying that theology should not be disconnected from christian life, and THIS have happened and happens in the Church.

What he said is fine, yeah, theology should be there to support your understanding of the faith and spread the word above all, not some scholarly endeavor up there in an ivory tower.

Exactly, if you are doing theology to publish some brainiac paper that nobody reads to puff yourself up and promote your academic career, then what is the case?

Theology has to answer to the issues people is having today. Look at the Church fathers. They always were talking about what was the big issue of their times. Each one of them wrote about THE major question of the time, they didn't just flexed the intellectual muscles.

Meanwhile, the Orthodox church has a rich tradition of lay theology stretching back a thousand years. It's intriguing that the Pope feels the need to say this now of all times, when theology in general is more or less stagnant.
