Deeds of the flesh. Die daily to your own fleshly lusts and become more like Christ.

It is your interior body that is the temple of the Holy Spirit, flagellation was done in penance of unholy thoughts, and bodily temptations.

If it works for a person then it should be allowed. But if it doesn't work, it should be stopped. It's a particularly ugly and un-beautiful solution and I don't like it at all.

how is hurting your body with whips or objects gonna "work" towards something useful?

OP just lift weights, its a healthy sort of pain, unlike scarring or whipping yourself, which will just result in psychological problems and ugly wounds

We're commanded to be humble in our sacrifices. Fasting is great and holy, but let all things be done decently and in order.
