It's telling you right there that they're carving something, most likely a god, into the tree, not just decorating it. The verses after those explain it even more.

I think it's pretty clear that it's talking about pagans who carve their "gods" into wood and think it actually embodies a god(demon.)
It has nothing to do with Christians decorating their homes with trees to honor the birth of Christ. Isaiah 60:13
