This is pretty much the route I took. I came into a little bit of money ($29k) when I was 19. Doesn't seem like much, but to a 19 year old kid in 1991 it was mad cash. I didn't know anything about investing, but stuck $25k into various money market accounts and used $3k as down payment for a modest house on a decent size chunk of land. $1k for myself for little extravagances.
I'm now 45, married, have 4 kids, and own my house. At 19 I could never have imagined being 45 or married or having kids. It took a lot of discipline to not just blow through that money. I am by no means wealthy, but I'm comfortable. My land is mine, my bills get paid, and my kids are fed and clothed and go to school.
OP: Save that money. You'll be glad you did.
