I don't know anything about history, so I can't help you, but this is amazing. Good job.

Don't give me too much credit, it's mostly just a copy-pasted list of Biblical books with a few philosophers thrown in.

The only hard part was finding all the church fathers works. That was actually difficult, I couldn't find a standard list anywhere and had to keep going back and forth

I just remembered; The Ladder of Divine Ascent is a pretty important book, in the Orthodox world at least. It was written by John of The Ladder, you can add it if you want to. Even if you disagree with the Orthodox dogma you'll notice that the writing style is beautiful.

you should read the development of Christian doctrine by John Henry Newman before starting.

Why is the chronology so bad near the end? Literally everyone after John of Damascus was before him

535aba No.576708

>>576686

(same anon, different ip cause I’m not at my computer) it’s because I couldn’t find a good chronology of works, so I found a list of writers and just put all their works in order of the list of writers. In retrospect, I should have just copied the table of contents of the Ante-Nicene fathers and added any works I felt were missing

Honestly I think Luke was written decades earlier in light of 1 Timothy 5:17–18, 1 Corinthians 11:24, and 1 Corinthians 15:1-7

2ed038 No.576754

>>576624

Pretty good list. I'd add "The Divine Institutes" and "On the Anger of God" by Lactantius and "Church History" by Eusebius. And I know this was written way later than everything else on the list, but you might want to add the "Summa Theologica" by St. Thomas Aquinas to bring things full circle since you've got Plato and Aristotle on there. Also, I think the first and second epistles of Clement were written around AD 80 and the Didache, depending on who you're asking, was written between AD 55 and AD 300.

My plan is for it to show the full development of Christian doctrine in order. It would be basically divided into the Old Testament era, New Testament era, apostolic fathers era, church fathers era, and then go on into medieval, reformation/counter reformation, and maybe even modern writings. Right now I need help due to a lack of knowledge of history and a need to get good lists of writings and writers

2ed038 No.577030

>>576847

I see. Try looking into the Nicene and Ante-Nicene Fathers series of books. It's a collection of almost all of the early Christian writings that still survive. You can download them all for free on the Classic Christian Ecclesiastical Writings website.

Alright everyone, I really need your help now. Is this a good list for the nicene and post-nicene fathers? Did I cover everything important? Is the list in good chronological order?

Beyond that, can anyone give me a good collection/list of medieval writings that I can use for the next section?

Also, I'm thinking of ending it at medieval writings and doing reformation/counter-reformation books as a separate reading list, because this is getting to big for me.

Any help?

OTOH you'll want to include Aquinas, Anselm, Abelard and Scotus for Western medieval theology, as well as the Rule of Saint Benedict. Thomas a Kempis, Hildegard of Bingen and Meister Eckhart would be vital for spiritual writings. I'm not as knowledgable for Eastern theology, but the Philokalia is probably a must. Once the Reformation starts, it will be a titanic task to make each denomination's development comprehensive, but the list so far looks great, I love the idea.

Incidentally, I decided to have the reformation be a separate thing, because it became too big. This actually became so big that my photo editing software wouldn't let me make it as big as I wanted, and I had to shrink it down. Here are the individual parts if anybody wants to piece together a better version

Keep up the good work. :)
