The Japanese aren't atheists. They're pagans. Even the ones who don't believe in the kami are still pagans not atheists. Atheism is a Christian heresy. It's a sect of 17th century pseudo-Protestantism that simply subtracted belief in the Christian God and replaced it with deism and then discarded even that, and has progressively corrupted the other doctrines since then. You won't find any atheists outside of the West except tourists from the West. Atheists who say that atheism is simply the lack of belief in any gods and nothing else are just deflecting criticism away from their heresy's other false doctrines, like atheo-triumphalism. The worst thing is that they often project their heresy onto Eastern religions like Buddhism and try to appropriate them and the product is Western atheism with a kitsch Asian aesthetic that has nothing to do with the actual Eastern religions. Disgusting. Japanese are mostly just a mix of Buddhist-Shintoists in various proportion, most of whom are people who don't believe in the kami but still respect Shinto anyway. There is no parallel to atheism in Japan and there never has been. The difference in behavior and attitude between Japanese and atheists is readily observable. They aren't arrogant, petulant bigots fueled by pseudointellectual vanity who sneer every time anything even remotely related to Christianity is mentioned, for starters. Never confuse a pre-Christian (pagan) with a post-Christian (atheist).

Man, I hate my college e-mail.
