I'm sorry if this sounds really retarded, but I never heard anything Sheol until very recently. For some reason the churches I went to never really talked about death or the afterlife much. I always thought that the believers of the Old Testament went to Heaven because they were faithful to God and He knew that Jesus would atone for their sins at a later date, so He let them in, sort of like being paid in advance and the passages about "Abraham's Bosom" was referring to being reunited with the other faithful. I also thought the passages in the Old Testament about a place with light, no praise of God, etc. were talking about Hell. With that out of the way, I have some questions about it. Did it actually exist, or did the ancient Jews just assume it's existence and aspects of it's nature because God had not fully revealed Heaven and Hell to them? From what I understand, the Jews eventually came to believe that good people go to a good place and bad people go to a bad place by the time Jesus was born. If it did exist, was there no praise of God and all that in Abraham's Bosom as well or just in the other parts of Sheol? Were gentiles who worshiped God(such as Ruth) allowed into Abraham's Bosom even though they weren't his descendants? Again, I'm sorry if all this sounds really stupid. My understanding of all this is probably completely messed up.

Sheol means the grave, essentially. Everyone during OT times went to Sheol, meaning the grave. This is why there were different views of the afterlife among Israelites before Christ. Everyone went to Sheol, but on what Sheol was people disagreed. However, we can derive that Sheol is a waiting place, and does not mean we cease to exist, based on clues in the Bible. I'm phone posting so, look for then yourself, fam. Bible gateway, search for "Sheol, Hades, death, grave."

As mentioned before, there is speculation that "heaven" refers to a particular part of Sheol that's called Abraham's Bosom. This is a temporary dwelling place until Christ returns to defeat death, where Sheol will be emptied, and those souls judged, then it will be tossed to the fire.

Keep in mind that Hades = Sheol. Sheol is the Jewish word for it, Hades the Greek.

Emptied out:

Revelation 20:13:

>And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done.

Destroyed the following verse, Revelation 20:13:

>Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.

I am of the opinion of the above. That is, Sheol, divided into good and bad, is the temporary dwelling place before the coming of Christ in power to give us the eternal New Jerusalem.
