Newconvertfag here, can I just skip the old testament and read the new testament. Don't fancy going through 50 hours of shit that Jesus mostly retconned. New testament is only 18 hours long which I can easily get through in a single day fueled by doritos and georgian chants

3d7109 No.554791

there are no shortcuts to the Kingdom of God

7f480b No.554793

are you gonna die in a few days or something? what's with the time limit?

>skipping the OT

you can start with NT and also read some OT books in between.

Proverbs, GEnesis, Ecclesiates, Job, Psalms…

Isaiah is a must.

53ff04 No.554795

Read the Gospels in order. Then the rest of the NT. Then the OT starting with Genesis. That's really the minimum. Then the Apocrypha. Then the Church Fathers. Don't know what's next.

ebea11 No.554796

>>554790

If you listen to it, listen to the OT as well. It doesn't sound like you have anything important to do anyways.

7cdb9e No.554798

Read the 4 accounts of the gospel, but afterward read the Bible from front to back. Jesus did not retcon anything, but every book of the Bible is about Him.

Then read the deuterocanon (aka "apocrypha") if you're reading from a Protestant Bible, as it might not be contained in it.

Also, don't rush to read the scriptures… It's not a storybook, or a documentary, or a school lesson you're trying to learn right before a test. It's a book of prayer and religion. Take your time with it. If you're in a hurry for a serious reason, go to church and ask a presbyter to give you a TL;DR (the sermon will be one in a certain way).

Most of the OT wasn't retconned, that's a misconception. The OT is made up of the Books of Moses, History books, wisdom/poetic books, and the prophetic books. The only stuff that was really retconned was the law of Moses, which is given in the last three Books of Moses (Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). So out of the 39 (or more if you're using a different textual tradition) books of the Old Testament, only three include a lot of "retconned" material. Read the entire Old Testament, and the entire New Testament. Read them both as much as you can

SEE THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH YOU ORTHOBROS!!!

… one minute you say something like this which i can absolutely and wholeheartedly shout my 'amen' to, and the next minute you say something… well… unorthodox borrowed outta the tradition of mysticism

it's almost as if you guys have a fine Trinitarian understanding coupled with a decent Christology marred by some flies in the ointment which you could easily get rid of, and as much as it might pain me i find i respect your position even though i disagree on many points*

really do love you guys

*soooooooooooooooooooo many points

Some of us love you guys to we do honestly have way to many people who hate the Reformed way too much though

My take on this is that we used to have a better understanding of where we got our beliefs from, at least those who where able to read and write, but now less people know how to discern correct beliefs and more people know how to read and write so we have a problem on our hands. I'm all for a return to the beliefs of the primitive church along with those developments which come naturally from them, such as credal statements which use non-Biblical language which describe Biblical concepts, but I'm honestly convinced we wouldn't end up Reformed, so that won't solve things. We do have way to many people that treat muh mysticism like solid theology though

>shit

No okay dude

Also you should read the NT first(John first) then the OT then the NT again

dude, i'm pretty confident that Grutzner was a Lutheran… which somewhat influenced his depiction of corpulent old priests, likening them to one of his favourite of Shakespeare's most famous wine-bibbers; Falstaff

(what i'm inferring here, is that his paintings - while affectionate - weren't always complimentary)

aren't you having a restful Sunday - and haven't i been generally pleasant for someone who comes from the *chans - you guys know i respect you and all, but let's go toe-to-toe on toll-paths another time, huh?

7cdb9e No.554874

As you've said, you've been pleasant, so having a Huge Internet Fight is not my expectation here. But with the countless differences between Reformed and Orthodox theologies, when you talk about doctrines "borrowed outta the tradition of mysticism," I have no idea what you have in mind. You could be talking about salvation by faith and works, you could be talking about synergism, you could be talking about the real presence in the Eucharist (which is much closer to the Roman Catholic doctrine than to the Reformed doctrine), you could be talking about the sacramental ordination within the Church, you could be talking about our sacramental theology overall, you could be talking about meme houses, you could be talking about theosis, you could be talking about hesychasm, and so on, and so on.

The psalms are literally the best part of the bible.

NT is mostly boring in my experience. OT is full of cool shit and invocations to God to intervene. NT is just a historical document and some letters.

You mean the foot rest? are you saying that they didn't actually use a foot rest? or the plate above his head which is explicitly mentioned in the bible?

> NT is just a historical document and some letters.

And Revelation and the prophecies my man.

I think top tier is reading the OT with the context of the NT where the mysteries are revealed, which is what the wise and kings of old times would have killed for as it says. 1 Peter 1:10-12.

How is the Law retconned? When asked for the greatest commandments Jesus quotes Deuteronomy and Leviticus.

25eda1 No.555222

>>555216

When people talk about retconned they

are talking about kosher laws, circumcision, and temple sacrifice. Obviously retconned isn't the proper word, and it doesn't apply. I was less trying to explain the complexities of the law and grace and more just trying to show the diversity and relevance of the Old Testament
