We had a homily a while back on Matt 21:31 - Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.
Now, there are two principal questions that are raised in commentary about this - are they going in now, or will they go in, and is it exclusive - that is, they go in and you do not?
The exact go in is proagó, conjugated in the third person present indicative - I go to the store, etc. Now there's no other use of this conjugation, but there is a use of the first person present indicative, in Mt 28:
Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”
Now, consider the verb here - if it says he eventually goes to Galilee where you will see him, that's bad. If it says he goes to Galilee and you do not, that's worse.
Bottom line: The Kingdom of Heaven is a real thing, and we're offered bits of it on Earth, through repentance, grace, sacraments, and liturgy. The rewards of the Christian life don't just occur when you're dead.
