Why is Latin considered such a powerful language? Why is Latin Mass such a necessity? I don't mind mass but why in Latin? From Mass to exorcism, why is Latin considered such a powerful language as to cast out demons from the bodies of man? Christ did not speak Latin, he spoke Hebrew. Why is Latin more powerful than Hebrew? If we dissect further, what makes a language more "powerful" than another? Discuss.

Pic unrelated.

I though he spoke Aramaic.

I don't think I can because my Church has some Syriac hymns and prayers.

Latin was the official language of the Roman Empire in which the Church initially spread. There were local languages, but Latin was the official language and it was used by everyone. Latin remained as the status quo official language in Europe until very recently.

Also Latin is the language of God.

5c9d56 No.546229

>>546221

Now that's some fresh heresy.

b1288b No.546230

>>546221

No, it's not. Eastern Christians use Aramaic extensively as it is the language Christ spoke.

5af8d3 No.546231

>>546221

Yes, as did the Jews of his time. We can see occasional glimpses of it in the Bible such as "Eli Eli lama sabachthani?" (My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?, Matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34) and "tabitha kumi" (Little girl, arise, Matthew 27:46). It is presumably the language Jesus spoke to his disciples in much of the time.

>>546219

The Muslim meme is that the NT was originally written in Aramaic, which was translated into Greek and subsequently lost. There is of course no meaningful basis for this claim (Greek was the lingua franca of the Roman Empire in those days so there was every reason to write the Gospel in Greek). That he spoke Aramaic is uncontroversial.

d29305 No.546233

>>546228

I get your point, but why is it considered such a powerful language, rather why IS it such a powerful language? If what >>546230 said is true and Christ spoke Aramaic/Syriac frequently, why isn't Syriac a more powerful language?

>>546231

True.

>Why is Latin considered such a powerful language?

Two millennia of European literary tradition, the power and legacy of the Roman Empire and the authority of the Latin Church.

Potentially Aramaic and Koine Greek,

dd8ce2 No.546242

No language is more "powerful" than any other. Latin because of Rome used to be like English is today because of America and Britian. Latin was a lingua franca and was widely understood by the educated of various nations. And so discussions in Latin weren't subject to falling into national cliques. And when Latin was no longer a living language it had the benefit of being further divorced from politics and fashion. Demons don't like Latin because they understand it and it reminds them of a holier time, although they often speak in Latin.

>Latin is the language of God

So God spoke to Moses in Latin? Did Jesus deliver his sermon on the mount in Latin?

>Why is Latin considered such a powerful language?

LARPing

>Why is Latin Mass such a necessity?

It isn't. Not anymore. English, Chinese, and Spanish are the most widely spoken languages in the world and, thus, Mass should be readily available in those languages.

811809 No.546248

>Chinese

This is due to population density on China, nobody outside of China speaks Chinese.

25bc20 No.546250

>>546248

>nobody outside of China speaks Chinese

That's like saying nobody outside of England speaks English. It's not true. However, it doesn't matter. Any church with a nearby Chinese populace should strive to offer Mass in Chinese. While obviously a church in Little Shoot, WI doesn't need a Chinese Mass, a church in Hong Kong sure should.

Latin? Not so much. Literally nobody speaks Latin anymore except LARPers and college Latin clubs.

dd8ce2 No.546251

The original language of mankind, which the first humans evidently supplied the vocabulary for, was apparently lost in the Confusion of Tongues. God and the angels have their own language.

>That's like saying nobody outside of England speaks English

You're trying to fit a fallacy where there isn't one.

China legitimately is the only country with Chinese majority, and even there people flock to learn a more cohesive language like English.

Does it offend you that Mass might be held in Chinese? Or do you demand Mass only be held in your particular language of choice? Or is it that you think Mass should only be held once a week, on Sunday morning, like the Protestants do and, thus, should only be held in one language?

Honestly, I think you're completely missing the point, which is that Latin only Mass is not important.

There seem to be older and contemporaneous languages, e.g. Proto-Niger-Congo, Proto-Afroasiatic, Proto-Nilo-Saharan, etc.

>Why is Latin Mass such a necessity?

1. It's a dead language, so words used in liturgy are going to mean the same thing after 10, 50 and 100 years, unlike in English

2. It would be much harder to change the mass for modernist priests, because people who don't speak latin will get extremly confused and won't understand the change anyway.

3. It brings unity to the Church. Wherever you go, you have the same mass with the same words and it doesn't favour any nation

4. It's ROMAN Catholic Church and her official language is latin

Also, it triggers modernists

Not the anon you were replying to but let me put this is simple terms because he phrased it poorly. All he was trying to say was that Chinese isn't a "widely spoken language" like English or Spanish per say because the language is largely confined in one area which is China. English and Spanish have multiple countries where it is the standard language and with English it's at a point where its now a universal language like Latin used to be. Think of it like this, if you are in some random country and you walk up to a random native and speak to him in English, Spanish, and finally Chinese and you did this several hundred times to the natives, which do you think they would be most likely to know? If anything Chinese would be at the bottom in chances of meeting a random stranger that know its tbh. I really don't think you guys disagree nor do I think these is any intent of malice, the other guy is just making a point and its going over your head just a tad friend.

Because it is a dead language it is by definition not profane. (in the sense of the common and vulgar)

That is why it has such a strong effect when placed in relation to the holy.

That it also has for most of it's history been a language taught and defined by the sole Christian Church on the planet doesn't hurt.
