On /christian/ everyone is apologetic but if you would go to average church and ask average churchgoer "Will you defend doctrine of Trinity" or "Will you defend baptismal regeneration" or "Will you defend papal primacy" etc I doubt that you will find many that will be able or even read about it.

Indulgences are prayers said for the dead whilst they languish in purgatory. Essentially, any soul that has accepted Christ as their savior, but the fruit of true salvation (ticket to heaven) didn't occur in life must go through a purgative process of spiritual cleansing before being able to join God in Heaven.

There are parts of the apocrypha/dueterocanonical scriptures that establish that prayer for the dead is good, which is the primary reason why Protestants flip their lid trying to reject these scriptures. This is why baptists have the "once saved always saved" system to explain how someone who accepts Christ but is still marred by sin can go to heaven.

Moving on, indulgences are mere promises that the Church shall use its powers to grant special prayers of the dead that shall assist you in purgatory, earthly and heavenly (through the intercession of the saints and the Blessed Mother Mary). Since the claim is that what the Church proclaims on Earth is the same as Heaven, this is an extension of this gift promised by Christ.

You can still achieve indulgences even now by doing specific works of spirituality, such as praying the Rosaries, or etc. When the RCC makes a proclamation, you are gifted what it promises.

It's a bit difficult, because the aspects of "nominal" Orthodoxy (tiers 1 and 2 here) are different depending on the culture. In the West it's about the same as in that pic, but in the East it's more along the lines of putting nationalism and culture above religion (basically it's the other extreme). I don't know how to possibly have both in the pic, or which side would reflect better the Orthodox populace - on one hand most Orthodox are in the East, on another hand most people here are Western.
