Is demonic possession real? Is exorcism real? Most evidence points to it being a result of mental illness and sometimes exorcism can act as a kind of placebo. Most reports of demonic possession and exorcism happen in the Pentecostal world which just seems way too coincidental. I believe in Satan and demons, but sometimes I feel so discouraged when it comes to exorcism and demonic possession. What does /christian/ think on this?

Which is exactly why 90% of alleged posession is just the person wanting attention/mentally ill and why the Church hires psychologists to determine this.

I think that possession is real. Body is a tool of ours that men can "lend" to them (mostly unconsciously) and story about legion seems quite real, but I think that you guys give demons too much credit. Far much than they deserve. Only reason that those pathetic beings represent something is due to weakened state of Mankind.

Demonic possession is real and is the result of rejecting God's authority through sin; which apart from God's grace leaves you subject to demonic authority as a choice of free will from your preference to sin.
Exorcisms are authoritative rites supplicant to Christ's authority which are undergone when preternatural activity is observed. Demons can cause mental illness but mental illness shouldn't be properly identified as needing to be exorcised unless a demon was the cause.
I'm not aware of any protestants with authoritative rites of exorcism because authority is ignored in general

attempting an exorcism without properly invoking the authority of Christ is a bad time. Call the diocesan exorcist instead since they already know how to deal with it

You are confusing symptoms with cause. Take for example headache: it can be caused by a brain aneurysm or because you haven't left the house in days. Either way the symptoms are similar, but the cause is different. Mental illness is just as real as demonic possession and in each case the symptoms need to be examined for the actual cause.

Psychiatrists classify demonic possession as a type of dissociative identity disorder (formerly called multiple personality disorder).
The only known effective treatment for this particular diagnosis is exorcism. Antipsychotics don't help.
Psychiatrists obviously don't perform or prescribe exorcism, but they will refer patients to a "culturally appropriate" minister if asked.
If you're a militant atheist and you develop demonic-themed D.I.D., you've basically landed yourself a lifetime ticket to a psych ward.
