What in your guys opinion is the most misunderstood new testament passage?

I personally think it's 1 Timothy 6:10

"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

Everyone quotes "money is the root of all evil" but almost never keeps "For the love of"

"Better is a dry morsel with quiet than a house full of feasting with strife."

6Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.

7For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you,

8nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you.

9It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate.

10For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.

11For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies.

12Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.

21Were you a bondservant when called? Do not be concerned about it. (But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity.)

22For he who was called in the Lord as a bondservant is a freedman of the Lord. Likewise he who was free when called is a bondservant of Christ.

23You were bought with a price; do not become bondservants of men.

24So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God.

Ugh

173,857.75% of 1Cor 13:11 !!!!

Just have a look at all the pics on google when you search for that passage. What do you think people think Paul is talking about.

Now go and read the entirety, in careful study, what 1Cor13 actually says, particularly v8-12, and what role verse 11 has in Paul's development of that chapter's central thesis.

I see it misused on /christian/ regularly whenever someone wants to prove video games are the debil or whatever. Objectionably annoying.

It's not pertaining to any specific passage, but today I had an atheist tell me in a debate that Christ was misogynist because he didn't allow female priests.

Just when I thought I've heard it all.

The infamous "turn the other cheek".

It's become to degraded and twisted that it's almost completely unknown what it actually means by the masses.

True, but people take it to mean "if someone is trying to kill you and your family/people, just let it happen/ask for more".

Meek meant something else back then. The connotation has changed, but the diction (other than the translation) hasn't changed. The meek, as used in that passage, is better defined as "Those who have power but do not inappropriately use it" than "quiet, gentle, and easily imposed on; submissive"

As someone raised Protestant and looking to convert to the Catholic/Orthodox faith, the Jew worship is real. They seriously think that blessing a Jew is like having a lucky rabbit's foot.

This, I hardly ever see people even bother to quote it in full, they just use the Neither Gentile or Jew part. Probably because Paul's stances on how slaves and women should live are clearly opposed to the interpretation they prefer.

If the love for money is the root of all evil, then money is even more so, because without money -> no love for money.

Yeah, this is the crux of the matter. Too often people read the scriptures for a cookie cutter way to live their life. They don't meditate on them or the Holy Spirit. This is the biggest problem in today's church.

The love of money is the root all all KINDS of evil, not ALL evil. The KJV is what I'm assuming you're quoting here.

The Bible doesn't for example say that Satan fell from Heaven because he loved money, he desired the throne of God.
