Actually, per God's Word, you become a child of God (adopted yes) as soon as you are born again of Holy Spirit. You would not need to wait until you die, God would not leave us powerless. We are His children and he equips us fully with power from on high as soon as we are born again.

This is the token of our inheritance. Then at the gathering together (some call this the rapture) of the saints (born again ones), we are given the full inheritance when we are given new minds and new bodies - we are made immortal/incorruptable.

KJV does not always accurately express what was originally written. The only sensible approach is to seek the original meaning of the writer. Taking only the KJV translation will result in an inaccurate understanding.

One inaccurate understanding you have is that of adoption and birth. The Bible is 100 percent clear that believers experience a new birth, that believers are born of God. Adoption is something additional, on top of being born, to make 100 percent explicit that not only are believers born of God, but also legally inherit all of the rights that come with that birth. Birth is the organic side, adoption is the legal side. Both are true.

Do not sell yourself short. Jesus is the first born. His believers are the many born.
