```Welcome to the planet of Linnaeus 5```
The planet of Linnaeus 5 sits almost two hundred million miles away from its twin suns, basking in their heat. It is one among ten different planets orbiting its suns and one of three planets within the binary system’s habitable zone. Orbiting around the planet is a sizable moon which pushes and pulls on the planet, driving its ocean’s currents. From outer space, the surface appears to be covered in a vast ocean with ice caps on both sides of the planet. It spins with a slight tilt.
Though there is no land, sheets of green can be spotted from the air. These are vast meadows of algae which blanket parts of the ocean, in some places thick enough to block out the sun to the ocean below. Feeding on these algae are schools of ray-like creatures that swallow them in clumps. In the shallow waters, are breeds of stationary predators which lash out at their prey while staying otherwise dangerously still, almost lifeless. Underneath, waiting to catch the detritus is yet another species of worm-like creature. These creatures have near global range due to the nature of the open ocean.
What awaits them is an unknowable but certainly grand future.
Common Name: Grax
Species Name: Lacertus Grakus Pax
Color: Purple
Diet: Carnivore
Population: 2, as pictured
Traits: Grasping appendage, big mouth, very weak jaws, sense of touch, stationary, reproduction by budding, long minor appendages
Species Description: The Grax are a species of stationary creatures that anchor themselves to any solid ground in shallow water. Though they will eat anything that floats into their big mouths, the Gra can also use the appendages growing off the top of their bodies to grab prey to feed themselves with. The Graphics reproduce by shooting both sperm and egg into the open ocean, with random chance determining whether they meet and also land on the ground on which they can grow. The Grax have improved upon the Gra by developing new appendages. Although these limbs are weak, their true purpose is to dance in the shallow waters to attract prey into the range of the strong grasping appendage.
+10 on the next roll involving limbs.
1 Physical. A carpet of flesh grows out from the Grax along the solid ground, increasing the chance that something lands on the Grax, letting it feed more often.
2 Behavioral. The Grax will hold onto its eggs and sperm until it has grasped prey, then will expel in the direction of its food in the hopes that the next generation will be closer to the source and be born along the pathways of its prey.
3 Territorial. Its territory will not be farther then it can reach with its grasping appendage.
Common Name: Scavenger Wum
Species Name: Erepos Wumus Olfactus
Color: Green
Diet: Omnivore
Population: The 3 tiles I have outlined on the map
Traits: Rapid regeneration, reproduction by fission, primitive olfactory glands
Species Description: The Wum are a species of bottom-dwelling worm-like creatures. They are primarily sediment feeders and will eat whatever detritus falls into their reach from the upper ocean. Despite their slow movement and lifestyle, the Wum possess remarkable regenerative properties. Their ability to regenerate also lends to their reproduction, where one individual will split itself in two, both halves eventually growing back into two separate but genetically identical specimens. A certain subspecies of Wum has emerged ahead of the curve, a random mutation giving them slits on the side of their headpart that contain primitive olfactory glands, letting them follow the food somewhat instead of randomly happening upon it. With natural selection in play, this subspecies becomes very successful.
1. Physical. With greater food at their disposal, some Wum grow in size, particularly their length.
2. Behavioral. The Wum, now in groups from their new ability to smell each other start to form herds on the seafloor. They bunch up like a wriggling carpet and comb the bottom searching for food. When some smell a food source, they will make for it, and the rest of the herd will follow. +10 to this action.
3. Territorial. The Wum extend their range further, filling out the rest of the nearby deepwater.
Common Name: Flo
Species Name: Volitares Secundus
Species Description: The Flo are a species of ray-like animal which wafts casually throughout the ocean though are capable of bursts of speed to reach food whenever it goes scarce. They feed on clumps of algae and are plentiful wherever there is plenty of algae. The Flo reproduce by laying eggs through their mouths in large clumps which float along the open ocean until they hatch, at which clones of their mother appear, already capable of fending for themselves.
1. Physical. The Flo begin to develop taste buds inside their mouth that helps lead them to more algae rich areas. They also continue to shift towards green as the generations move along.
2. Behavioral. The Flo begin to prioritize laying their eggs in places that are more concentrated with algae using their sense of taste to guide them rather than blindly expelling them.
GLOBAL EVENTS
Tectonic activity, especially around the western half of the map changes landforms slightly causing volcanoes to erupt and most particularly, a mid-ocean ridge to form.
Algae blooms appears to even out with the growing population of Flo on the planet. In addition, a mold-like fungus begins to grow on the algae, especially in the center, helping to decompose it. Though it is inedible to the Flo who swallow it along with their food, it is otherwise harmless in small doses and may even prove a new food source.
>>51718
The addition of a carpet is benign but over-all not too beneficial. If anything, it's a waste of calories. Holding onto food and using it as a medium to reproduce, however, proves useful in both spreading the species and providing nurishment to its young. Thanks to favorable ocean currents, the grax are able to expand their species further.
-5 on the next roll involving food or feeding.
+10 on the next roll involving reproduction or expanding territory (choose one)
Expand your territory by 1 hex or gain the [mating season] trait (choose one)
>>51719
A larger average size bodes well for the species, especially due to its lack of predators. This lends well especially in their reproduction, as Scavenger Wums are able to split into more individuals than their non-smelling counterparts. Their large size coupled with their more social behavior despite their slow movement, gives the Wum a distinct efficiency. Congratulations for becoming the first social animal to evolve on Linneaus! However, as clades of Scavenger Wums form, competition for space also becomes more fierce.
You can take 1 hex of territory for free.
Roll 1d100. Rolling below 50 will cause two different "tribes" of scavenger wum to branch off, at which point you can choose 2 hexes within your species' range for your new branch species. The other branch species will not be friendly. Rolling above 50, however, will increase your territory by 1. If you roll a 90+, the scavenger wums will also gain the ability to enter shallow waters in search of new food.
>>51721
To the jawed gra, it appears that size does matter, as longer grasping appendages allow them to gather food much more effectively with less risk of it escaping. Their aggression, however, serves more to keep food away, especially as their more erratic motions serve to stir up the algae growing above them, in turn keeping Flo from coming near. Although the jawed gra may seek to expand, their numbers are simply cut short due to competition from other gra groups.
+0. This would have been a +5, however failure to provide visual aid has netted you a penalty.
>>51725
The flos' newfound sense of taste gives them greater ability to navigate their surroundings not only allowing them to find more nutrient rich food but also avoid patches of algae overgrown with mold and even avoid predators. Though their change in color does not help them, once vision has evolved, it would certainly serve as good camoflage among the algae blooms. Laying their eggs near algae, however, does not serve the species too well, putting them closer to predation by the gra. The ocean currents also tend to break up egg clumps, nullifying the benefit of laying eggs in a certain place.
+5 to the next roll involving gaining new territory. Also add the trait [taste] to your list of traits.
Two tiles have been added for you on the map represented in yellow.
I've indicated the free tile I'll be taking on the map.
1. Physical. The newly embiggened Wum start to develop strengthened muscles from all the moving they've been doing in conjunction with their relatively risk free food surplus. They gain a strong "foot" on their underside that lets them move after food that much faster, and keep a better grip.
2. Behavioral. The bigger and stronger Wum start asserting themselves in the herd by crawling over their smaller and weaker counterparts in order to get primo position for food seeking. The smaller, weaker Wum begin to accept this and let their superiors pass, content to scrounge up what they can.
3. Territorial. Rolling 1d100 to see which outcome I get. <50 for the tribe split, >50 for the increased territory, >90 for shallow capability.
It seems that due to the flo's method of reproduction, their populations have split. Due to the presence of a new sort of animal- males. While their new method of reproduction ensures a much stronger gene pool protecting the species from threats such as disease, the behaviors which have come about this prove not as advantageous as many flo mothers ingest their own young on accident and others that do not die in childbirth, proving detrimental to the population.
The scavenger wums' new feet allow them great mobility, though it does very little on the sandy ocean. The reflexive power of the jawed gra aids them greatly. Not only are they more reflexive and reactive, but also more deadly, some individuals capable of using their arms in a whip-like fashion against the relatively soft bodies of the flo they eat. This process, requiring much more brain-power than the usual reflexive grabbing of the more primitive gra, favors populations that are also "smarter". Being smarter than their ancestors, however, doesn't mean necessarily that they are smart. Although sweeping the sea floor may seem like a good idea, because their primary food source swims, they are more likely to find food reaching upward.
Going closer to the sun is not necessarily a good thing. With global temperatures rising and algal blooms being less covering than in the past, the sexus are at higher exposure to the elements, and especially the rays of the sun. More photophilic individuals become blind and some even begin to develop moles and other growths on their skin. Historically, this is the first case of cancer. While their first stint into sexual reproduction was rocky, generations reinforce habits allowing the sexus to become more effective in their childrearing, though without a proper thought process, this is rudimentary at best. As the sexus multiply, their range expands, pushing away other, more primitive flo.
Another species of flo expands into the range of the sexus and these distant relatives are anything but benign. The fro have evolved hardened nubs at the edge of their mouths. Historically this may have been to help break up algae clumps, though the fro also have another use for it- biting. Though their mouth muscles aren't very well developed, the fro take cookie-cutter-like bites out of the flesh of other flo.
1. Physical. The new wealth of sensory input provided by their spots has driven yet further development in some Wum. They develop holes like those for their olfactory receptors, but bigger and specialized to distinguish vibrations. Effectively a more sensitive version of their back spots, these primitive ears allow the Wum an even greater understanding of their surroundings.
2. Behavioral. With this new development, the Wum find that their food rarely makes much noise, and sound more often means danger. Hearing the whipping of the Gra's limb, they learn to stay away from that territory. +5 to this roll.
3. Territorial. Attempt to expand territory. Not expanding into jawed gra territory, -5 to this roll.
Common Name: Grax
Species Name: Lacertus Grakus Pax
Color: Purple
Diet: Carnivore
Population: 3
Traits: Grasping appendage, big mouth, very weak jaws, sense of touch, stationary, reproduction by budding, long minor appendages, carpet, mating season, holding food for reproduction, hibernation, carpet grasping arms, Ganglia (Brain Growth 1), Perception of other Grax through touch,
Species Description: The Grax are a species of stationary creatures that anchor themselves to any solid ground in shallow water. Though they will eat anything that floats into their big mouths, the Gra can also use the appendages growing off the top of their bodies to grab prey to feed themselves with. The Graphics reproduce by shooting both sperm and egg into the open ocean, with random chance determining whether they meet and also land on the ground on which they can grow. The Grax have improved upon the Gra by developing new appendages. Although these limbs are weak, their true purpose is to dance in the shallow waters to attract prey into the range of the strong grasping appendage.
1 Physical. Sharp Protrusions on Arms. A sharp protrusion has grown on some areas of the arms. It increases the success of feeding by crippling and weakening prey, reducing the attrition cost of squeezing or beating prey to death, saving more energy to reproduce come mating season, and more energy to thrive individually.
2 Behavioral. Sharpening. The feel of a long protrusion could be cumbersome. By scoring the protrusions against rocks, or stronger protrusions, it can keep it from growing too long and maintain its effectiveness.
The scavenger wum manage to take over their territory, able to outcompete the other wum in their area due to a plethora of traits that work to their advantage. This newfound prosperity, however, gives them very little incentive to move out of their environment. In addition, their newfound fear of the gra keep them from expanding even further.
-10 to the next roll involving expanding territory.
>>51741
While growing on rocks gives the grax some mineral resources, because their diet consists primarily of the squishy flo, they simply do not have enough calcium to support the sharp protrusions they grow. Because of this, many grax develop a habit of scraping at the rocks, and others cannibalism in order to maintain this trait. Scraping at the rocks has led some to individuals surviving better due to sharpening their natural weapons.
The malas's ability to coordinate better works well in a vacuum, allowing them to outcompete other gra using superior tactics. However, being stationary creatures, their actual ability to work in such a manner is quite limited. Another interesting adaption- using their appendages to help the spread of their genes does help slightly during the periods of weaker currents.
Grouping also helps the sexus greatly in dealing with predators, often too disorganized to deal with large schools of sexus swimming in tandem. These adaptations in conjuction greatly help in the expansion of their territory, especially back toward their ancestral homeland.
The ability to collect algae proves beneficial to the species, attracting prey to the grax. While it acts primarily as bait, with the grax's arms generally being stronger than their prey, anything coming close enough ends up being food anyways. Likewise, using their new natural weapons proves to not be very effective, especially in the area the grax grows on, which happens to be less rich in calcium. However, their adaptions which allow them to cover much more ground than other gra gives the grax a unique advantage when expanding. Due to this, the grax end up taking up more territory than ever.
While a notochord gives the sexus better control of their swimming compared to their ancestors, many specimens become finnicky. Its connection to movement also gives the sexus a weak spot, a bad bite from a gra or fro enough to cause an individual to swim out of control before finally sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Likewise, the mating dances of the sexus are ineffective to say the least. The sexus are still able to reproduce, as they usually do, however, these dances appear not to be too appealing to females and likely won't be very popular any time soon.
Having a tongue is fairly useful, however, with most of the wum's sensations being on top of its body, the tongue seems clumsy, usually getting in the way more often that it helps. In addition, it seems that at the bottom of the ocean, being picky is not exactly beneficial. While the scavenger wum avoid rock and sand, a lot of organic debris gets underneath them. In addition, the scavenger wum miss out on important minerals in their diet.
The malas, moving away from their home, have a rocky start. Many roll over and are not strong enough to pick their own bodies up or roll themselves back over to feed, starving to death. In addition, their migration back into old territory causes a run-in with a branching line of hardier cousins. In addition to being able to live in less shallow water, these distant relatives, the grex, have small, hook-like fibers growing off the top half of their grasping appendages which prove especially useful in grabbing the new, more mobile malas. This is not a complete tragedy, however, as those who are capable, are able to find food when it has gone scarce.
The sexus' notochord leaves much to be desired, and also comes with a plethora of new problems, in some specimens becoming underdeveloped. 1 Physical. Exoskeleton. To protect against damage in the violent feedings the grax and its arms have developed an exoskeleton. It is an improvement upon the innate hydrostatic skeleton that helped keep the arms upright.
2 Behavioral. With the exoskeleton the arms can support themselves in an upright position with less effort. They try to maintain [Upright Arms] to bring the algae closer to the sunlight, and help exercise muscles against the current.
3 Territory. Expand.
Traits: Grasping appendage (Longer), Whipping Appendage, big mouth, very weak jaws, sense of touch, stationary, Large size, Eye spots, reproduction by budding, migratory, mating season
Species Description: The Gra are a species of stationary creatures that anchor themselves to any solid ground in shallow water. Though they will eat anything that floats into their big mouths, the Gra can also use the appendages growing off the top of their bodies to grab prey to feed themselves with. The Graphics reproduce by shooting both sperm and egg into the open ocean, with random chance determining whether they meet and also land on the ground on which they can grow. Global Events
As rain falls on the world of Linnaeus 5, water cracks the ground which has newly sprung up and sediment created by the wum has begun washing up, picked up by the waves creating sandy beaches, and running from inland, another new untapped feature: rivers. With rivers comes an additional new resource, that being fresh water.
DOOMSDAY CLOCK: 12/15
>>51773
Years of natural selection has thinned the heard of sexus, making sure that only the best and brightest survived. They become smarter and more conscious of the tide as well as predators. Still, they have a long way to go. The sexus also move further inland, many migrating from the shallow sea closer to the land in order to scrape algae off the cliffs.
You can trade 2 tiles out of the shadows for one tile closer to the shore and 1 tile with a river (This is optional).
>>51774
The wum's newfound ability to taste helps them search the ocean floor. This, however, in conjuction with their habit of sticking together in groups, causes them to stay closer to more reliable foodsources, halting their expansion.
Lose 1 tile.
>>51775
The grax continue to do well. Minerals absorbed by the algae as well, their diet of flo, and the volcanic activity introducing new sediment into their particular area of ocean allows grax to adapt exoskeletons supporting their otherwise squishy bodies as well as their muscular appendages.
Next turn, you can choose to have a new competitive species enter your habitat and if you do, you can add 1 additional tile to your territory next turn.
>>51776
The new eyespots prove useful to the species in that they aren't running right into predators. As a matter of fact, keeping their tentacles high allows them to stray far from danger. Keeping away from danger seems to inhibit their expansion, but their ability to swim opens up new possibilities as well.
Next turn, you can roll 1d100 in addition to your other rolls. If you roll >50, your species gains the trait [watchful] in addition to the next adaptation.
If a trait is adapted allowing more efficient swimming, also get +10 to the next territory roll involving moving away from the shallows.
Common Name: Scavenger Wum
Species Name: Erepos Wumus Olfactus
Color: Green
Diet: Omnivore
Population: The 3 tiles I have outlined on the map
Traits: Rapid regeneration, reproduction by fission, primitive olfactory glands
Species Description: The Wum are a species of bottom-dwelling worm-like creatures. They are primarily sediment feeders and will eat whatever detritus falls into their reach from the upper ocean. Despite their slow movement and lifestyle, the Wum possess remarkable regenerative properties. Their ability to regenerate also lends to their reproduction, where one individual will split itself in two, both halves eventually growing back into two separate but genetically identical specimens. A certain subspecies of Wum has emerged ahead of the curve, a random mutation giving them slits on the side of their headpart that contain primitive olfactory glands, letting them follow the food somewhat instead of randomly happening upon it. With natural selection in play, this subspecies becomes very successful.
I've marked the tile to be removed on the map.
1. Physical. The process of getting nerves feeling in the tongue has spurred nerve growth across the body of the Wum. They can now feel all over, though their backs remain more sensitive to pressure than the rest of their bodies.This development does not manifest a visible physical change in the Wum.
2. Behavioral. With all these senses available to them, the Wum start to further develop their social systems. They will not only travel in a single large herd, but will at times have some of their number branch off to check a new direction, either for threatening sounds or feelings, or attractive smells or tastes. The scouting party will then return to the herd and either lead them to a successful find or keep the herd from going in that direction. In this way, the Wum begin to support each other as a group.
3. Territorial. Roll to expand territory.
Allow competitive species and add 1 tile as pictured
1 Physical. Budding. In times with high reserves of energy, and when not threatened, the Grax arms can grow and separate the arm tips in a new form of reproduction. It can use its muscles to swim, its exoskeleton and protrusion to protect itself, and a new mouth to feed in the shallows of algae blooms, foreign as well as its own, and small prey until it finds a suitable ground by testing with its protrusion.
2 Behavioral. Kill the competitive species. It is the Grax nature to feed and to kill prey. They have the strength, resources, and keys to fight, win, and feed. They will stab with their long arms and bleed the enemy to death.
The wums' heightened ability to feel is a major boon in the darkness of their natural environment and moving into shallower waters closer to gra territory, even helps them avoid predation along with their larger numbers. This allows them to evolve greater cognition especially in terms of forming social bonds, their kind beginning to associate sounds, tastes, and feelings. In other words, the wums begin to form a memory.
A new species crawls into grax territory and prove prolific. The thum are small, worm-like creatures that hitch rides on the back of flo, digging into them with hook-like teeth. They are not predators, however. In fact, they are primarily herbivorous, usually using the flo to get from algae bloom to algae bloom. The flo that get too close to the grax and ultimately find themselves prey, however, end up dropping thum where they can feed off the algae growing off the body of the grax, using their small size to avoid being eaten.
The grax's new form of reproduction certainly allows them to be more prolific as mature grax are able to create more fully formed specimens out of excess tentacles, further spreading their species. Whenever caught, the grax are able to effectively deal with the new intruders by picking them off their own bodies, even if it doesn't completely get rid of them.
Another cousin of the flo that diverged from the sexus when they developed their unique reoproduction was the bfos which had inherited the land the sexus left behind. The bfos have long necks and a fleshy frill stretching from their head down to the larger body making them very efficient swimmers. They have also independently adapted eyespots allowing them to navigate in the new shallow environment, avoiding predators such as the gra, and begin to outcompete sexus into the areas into which they had spread.
Thanks to the sexus' ability to feel, their newfound habit to peek their heads out of the water, and their newly developed eyes, the sexus are able to find pools of calmer water inland during rainy seasons, able to lay their eggs in tide pools which are later washed off into the ocean, about the same time the sexus reach full maturity.
Membranes growing from their limb/eye stalks afford the malas much better mobility and maneuverability. The malas have come a long way from their stationary ancestors, trading their ability to grasp at prey for new horizons, swimming beyond their ancestral pools in search of greater areas. Though they are still bound to shallow water in order to spawn, the malas are more than capable of venturing beyond.
1. Physical: Due to a strange series of mutations and chance breeding the Malas have developed a pair of tentacle/eye stalks similar to how they once had near the base of their body. Allow competitive species and add 1 tile as pictured
1 Physical. Clear Foul-Tasting Anti-Acidic Mucus. The Grax proximity to the volcanoes since their inception triggered an evolution where they secrete a material to protect their carpet skin, and the symbiotic algae, from damaging/acidic substances. As the Grax can produce the mucus it can also break it down which allows it continue eating the algae freely. If the thum try to eat the mucus covered algae they will likely have a tougher time eating and digesting them, slowing them down, and making them more likely to get caught, die over time by starvation, or avoid the Grax territory. Of the Grax that made mucus, the ones who coincidentally made foul tasting mucus had the greatest results of preventing skin damage and eliminating competition. So it is that they out-breed the rest. (It is clear and thus does not change the appearance).
