>An Ash builder
I think I'll return to my origins with a character that would make Elias launch into an angry tirade.
Name: Niall Mac Cadhla O' Gruagáin
Character Fluff: Niall Mac Cadhla O' Gruagáin is the son of an oracle in the Northwestern village of Gruagáin. His father, Cadhla Mac Fachtna O' Gruagáin, had the power to communicate with the spirits of the deceased, and was the interpereter of their will in the village. Niall inherited none of his power, but rather took after his grandfather, Fachtna Mac Finnian O' Gruagáin, who was a mighty warrior and builder. From a young age, Niall has hewn and hauled the stone from which the village's buildings and monuments are constructed. In this time of relative stability in the empire, he has also helped to defend his village from the beasts to the North, and owns his own spear, shield, and helmet, identifying him as one of the Warrior/Builder class, who are not allowed to carry swords like men of the Warrior class. Like most of his village, he opposes the increasing levels of centralization in the Empire. Recently, a great wanderlust overtook him, and he gained the blessing of the village elders to go out and seek his fortune.
Homeland Fluff: Gruagáin is a village of hardy people in the cold Northwest of the Empire, where rain is nearly incessant, and the forests are thick. During the dry season, men burn pyres, and spread the life-giving ashes in their fields, and during the wet season, they maintain their irrigation systems, which helps the water run off into rivers without damaging the soil. The land is extremely rocky as well, due to glacial deposits from an ice age past. The people use the rocks to build homes and public buildings, which they cover with soil, and allow grass to grow, insulating their homes. In addition to living spaces, the people of Gruagáin also build tombs and monuments, to honor the dead.
Religion Fluff: The people of Gruagáin have great respect for the dead, and believe that when men pass, they become spirits, great or minor, depending on how honorable, diligent, courageous, and daring they were in life. The ancient king Ruadhán Mac Críodáin unified many of the Northern tribes, and waged war against the Emperor, seeking freedom for his people. Because of his legendary stature, Ruadhán is worshipped as a god of war and freedom, and is chief in the Gruagáin pantheon. Other spirits are remembered only by their families, having been average in life. When a person dies, their body is preserved until the dry season, when they are cremated atop one of the life giving pyres of summer. Nearly all of the deceased have their names and deeds recorded on stone pillars outside of family homes. These are integral to the Gruagáin religion, because if a person goes unrecorded, they are robbed of power in the afterlife, and become wandering spirits, unless their deeds are carved for all to see. This is the fate to which terrible criminals are condemned: Their names are expunged from documents, and none may carve their deeds into the holy pillars. Instead of a traditional pyre burial, sinners are brought into the forest, and are left to be devoured by the local flora and fauna.
