In the year 2020 a wave of rapid advancement in green energy technology and implementation, called the Green Revolution, swept throughout the world. In the year 2040 pollution has dropped to nearly the same as it was before human habitation in most of Europe, and a few short years after in North America. In the year 2045 unexplained phenomenons occur in Germany, Japan, and USA involving creatures of myth and explosions of unknown causes. Now it is 2050 and the magic revolution is in full swing.

This is where you come in. You are a citizen of Greenlight California, a super city designed and maintained as the most advanced city in the states. Not only any citizen either, you are one of the one in millions able to create large amounts of mana and use it, a magic user, and you have been given permission by the city to open your own school of magic. A school of magic differs from a normal school, and more akin to a gym focusing on a martial art, you are allowed to study magic, develop new spells and ideas, and teach those to your disciples in your own way as long as you do not break any other laws or manipulate the minds of others.

Magic:

Magic is a strange force that is not fully understood. What is known is that all living creatures create mana and that even non-living things have mana in them. There are some creatures that create large amounts of mana, these either become Magic Users, monsters, or explode from their own energy. Magic users can 'spin' mana from inside themselves to become mana threads, these threads are 'weaved' into spells. Mana can also be consolidated into gaseous, liquid, and crystalline solid forms. Unfortunately alone these have no properties to be used and will usually remain inert. They must be 'colored' by an 'element' such as fire, water, or air. This coloring process happens by leaving Mana Matter in the presence of the desired element, or for Mana thread passing through a 'lens' which is usually a Mana Crystal of the desired element. Mana can also be infused into a substance, and if done through a lens can be used to give the material magic properties. There are also 'sprites' or beings of pure mana that can be bribed with mana into aiding a magic user.

Backstory: Finding out you have magic came as a great surprise to many - in most cases these surprises were pleasant. Not so for John: finding out he could command corpses and talk to passed-on spirits was quite traumatic, and the difficulties he faced when other people found he could talk to some of the dead were, if anything, even worse. The specifics of who exactly he can communicate with seem very shaky, but he still gets consultations from the GLPD's Homicide department on occasion. Other odd jobs include working with various museums and supplying manual labour with no questions asked, though those gigs don't tend to last.

Backstory: For a long time Samantha thought she was born to perfectly average parents and living a perfectly average life and had no idea she had magic. Just the way her handlers wanted her to. She never thought it strange her lessons covered physical combat almost exclusively nor did she suspect why she was given a gun at the ripe old age of 13 to attack and kill her neighbors as a homework assignment. To her it was all normal every day life. Then she discovered the spark, the ability to attack things with not just her fists or her guns but through electricity. That was when her life was revealed to be a sham. Her handlers immediately tried to have her executed and she fought back like she had been trained to do all her life. The training grounds for new operatives of ALARM was destroyed by their one of their own students. And Samantha found herself alone.

It's now 14 years later, and Samantha has opened her school, a front to hide the fact that she is following in her handlers foot steps, though not for ALARM but to fight them.

Backstory:

When she was a young girl, Samantha would always complain to her mother that she somtimes "heard people singing", even when it was completely quiet. As she grew older, the voices and singing would get louder, more common, and she knew if she went to certain places or did certain things, she could hear them higher.

It was the most beautiful song she ever heard, like millions of voices softly singing a great symphony, the sound of every truth and beautiful thing she knew echoing everywhere.

She was, unknowingly, listening to magic itself, mana, the harmonious energy of the planet as it coursed through the air, the ground, and leylines of the world.. She was particularly sensitive to it.

Until one day, she decided to sing with it. It happened that she was playing with a toy pony, and heard the song again. She sung, and in her words spoke about the horse, it's wonderful flowing mane, it's strong muscles, how it galloped on the fields. And the horse sprang to life and galloped before her even as she sang.

That was the first instance of her channeling raw mana into an object. Over the years, many more strange occurrences would happen. Channeling raw mana into objects around her and causing strange events, she found herself more and more secluded and ostracized from her friends and family. One day after her parents shouted at her furiously she ran away from home, tears streaming.

Then she met able Abel. He didn't seem to mind her singing. He seemed to like it! His friends did too, they /loved/ her singing. They were so kind and would always like to hear it. Now she sticks by him, happily singing her song to someone who would hear it.

Backstory: Patrick spent a long time in his grandfather's forge, and loved every minute of it. In his 18 years of life, he quickly leaned the art of the craft, and was almost a master of the forge, in his own right. When he first heard of magic, he went and bought what was then known as a lens, and put it up in the forge. The next day, he went out to the forge, and created a sword. When he pulled it out of the cooling water, he walked over to his test dummy and gave it a swing. As the sword hit the dummy (as it was not sharpened yet), the dummy began to freeze. This was his first enchantment. After trial and error, he learned that he could enchant both things he made, and also things he did not, although the enchantments on things he made were 100x stronger.

Backstory: Von Richard III long ago learned that there is no profit in fighting yourself. And so quite lucky was he when he developed the ability to harvest, refine, and trade the mana of other people and creatures. He quickly built up a small underground empire. Paying off magic users to do his dirty work for him, keeping sprites on retainer and in many cases acting as a bank of sorts. However this all ended when a harvesting mission went wrong and left him injured for a while. Unable to maintain control while hospitalized his empire crumbled and he was forced to flee England.

Upon arriving in California and finding the city of Greenlight a new idea occured. Why was he taking risks and harvesting mana himself? Train up some apprentices to do the work for him and he could expand faster than ever before and maintain safety while doing so. But he would have to appear loving to the apprentices or keep them cowed in fear of him lest they attempt to take over his position……hmmmm which way should we go about this?

Backstory: In 2020, Brian and Cianna Morgan moved to Greenlight, hoping for new opportunities in their life. With them came their youngest child, Aife. Aife was always a precocious youth, quick to tantrum and short of tolerance. Her sole grace was her love of the forests, which even in her youth had already begun to return. As she grew up, she blistered against the authoritative nature of her parents and education, frequently prone to outbursts.

Her parents were dismayed at how she threw away the opportunities they had worked so hard to provide, but they couldn't reach her. At the age of 17, she left home, seemingly for good.

At the age of 25, her fervors were, in her mind, finally justified by the return of magic. Despite a newfound power among the beasts and plants, the stars and stones, the secret ways of the forests, she was still as headstrong and fiery as ever. Aife returned to Greenlight, having molded her anger and distemper into a singular purpose: to ensure people understood the beings of myth, and to ensure they respected - and feared - the Old Ways.

1. Well, since Patrick knows he needs to be able to create a wide variety of enchantments, he also knows he needs to have a few lenses. He researched online what to do, and could only get to the point ot putting solidified Mana near an elemental source, he decided to try it. It was the most beautiful song she ever heard, like millions of voices softly singing a great symphony, the sound of every truth and beautiful thing she knew echoing everywhere.

She was, unknowingly, listening to magic itself, mana, the harmonious energy of the planet as it coursed through the air, the ground, and leylines of the world.. She was particularly sensitive to it.

Until one day, she decided to sing with it. It happened that she was playing with a toy pony, and heard the song again. She sung, and in her words spoke about the horse, it's wonderful flowing mane, it's strong muscles, how it galloped on the fields. And the horse sprang to life and galloped before her even as she sang.

That was the first instance of her channeling raw mana into an object. Over the years, many more strange occurrences would happen. Channeling raw mana into objects around her and causing strange events, she found herself more and more secluded and ostracized from her friends and family. One day after her parents shouted at her furiously she ran away from home, tears streaming.

Then she met able Abel. He didn't seem to mind her singing. He seemed to like it! His friends did too, they /loved/ her singing. They were so kind and would always like to hear it. Now she sticks by him, happily singing her song to someone who would hear it.

At least they provided her with entertainment for when she wasn't being subjected to tests, sure she may have considered the playbox 300 to have been an attempt at placating her and their consciences, but after a week of nothing to do she had broken down and started playing it. There wasn't much else for her to do while unsupervised, well there were all the textbooks and manuals that they had left for her to use to learn from, but those get boring quickly.

Despite my vehemence, the word doesn't really do my irritation justice.

To do that, though, I'm going to need a lens, and to get a lens I'm going to need some suffering. Physical, mental, the kind doesn't much matter, but I'm going to need a lot of it. It looks like I'm taking a trip to the hospital.

When he first entered a city, he was overwhelmed, and he stood out like a sore thumb. A street thug thought that he'd be an easy mark. The man was wrong. Hans was grabbed and pulled into an alley, where he was held at knifepoint. Time slowed down for Hans, and not simply because of the gallon of adrenaline in his body. Everything; the mugger's waving knife and beckoning hand, even his own breathing slowed down significantly. When the knife came, he was able to see everything, and react more quickly than he possibly could have otherwise. Even though he moved no faster, the whole encounter seemed almost effortless to Hans, as he disarmed the mugger and dislocated his arm. From there, he went straight to the local karate school (it was the only martial art he had heard of) and signed himself up for a few lessons with what little money he had on him. His training took off at leaps and bounds. Over the next few years, he studied eastern, western, and modern martial arts with the conviction of a man possessed, eventually going on to win a few local tournaments. With a couple black belts and a glint in his eye, Hans Gruuman moved to Greenlight, a hotspot for the martial arts scene. In the years since his encounter with the mugger, Hans has studied magic in an attempt to capture that immense feeling of control that he felt in that alleyway.

1. I've heard of the other teachers and their grand academies and gymnasiums. A person needs nothing other than nature to hone their body to perfection. The first thing I'll do is go location scouting in the area to see if there are any parks, abandoned buildings, or areas permanently "under development". After getting the job you decide to check out the lab, which happens to be in the local nature reserve. An hour of riding on the mag-rail later and you find yourself at the entrance of a heavily forested area, the small lights darting between trees marking the nature spirits. When you create a mana gem it takes on the nature element remarkably fast. The gem is small and a deep green in color. Easy enough to do, as long as they arn't too obstinate. The job pays 5,000 Credits, and a bit of help with your housing problem. There is this old home near the graveyard, that some say is haunted, and between you and the clerk your talking to is definitely haunted. It was a older model home where some suicides happened and the city wants rid of it since no one wants to buy it. The chief will put it in as a bonus if you get all the body locations from the ghosts, but if you don't you need to chose the credits or the house.

To make a mana gem infused with kinetic element you would have to make it experience pure kinetic force for a long period of time, and you do not have the equipment for that. I certainly didn't think so anyways, I mean sure, there's a lot you can do with the power to fuse and split atoms, but you can't usually do it whenever you damn well feel like, people tend to get upset when you create radiation of any kind, even if it's been scientifically proven as harmless. Sure they're happy when you microwave their food almost instantaneously, probably think you're a fire mage or something, and then they find out and suddenly you're confined to an old power-plant that's been decommissioned and watched like you're a reactor that's about to meltdown. Welcome to my life by the way, sure it isn't as bad as it could be. Instead of being out in the sun and making friends, I'm locked away from the sunlight and basically have nothing to do expect comply with the scientists and their desires for experimentation with my powers, saying that it will allow them to learn about atomic energy like never before. Bah, I'm tired of these tests and science, I just want a friend, I want to see the sun! I swear if I don't make it out of here I'm going to create my own bloody sun, see how the eggheads like that! It certainly hasn't helped that I've started to become spiritual about this shit, I didn't even mean to, I've basically got nothing to do between tests other than watch movies and read, and well, a lot of philosophical and spiritual stuff makes a lot more sense when you basically have the powers of creation at your fingertips, that and too many superhero comics/movies will rot your brain and give you god-complexes, it's honestly kind of hard to keep control of sometimes.

Well that was irritating, I thought they wanted me to practice and do stuff so they could learn about radiation and whatnot. Well whatever, maybe it was just a bad day or something, hopefully they wont mind if I tried to make a lense today. I don't really know what else they want me to do, kind of need a lense to really do alot with my magic.

Other than that, the day is pretty much set up to do studying, I think they're bringing in one of the tutors to test me on my knowledge, don't know what the test will be on yet though.

Ontop of that I want to try and find out if they'll let me outside for an hour if I promise not to use any of my magic, I just want to see actual sunlight for once, I haven't been able to see sunlight since I got here.

Backstory: Patrick spent a long time in his grandfather's forge, and loved every minute of it. In his 18 years of life, he quickly learned the art of the craft, and was almost a master of the forge, in his own right. When he first heard of magic, he went and bought what was then known as a lens, and put it up in the forge. The next day, he went out to the forge, and created a sword. When he pulled it out of the cooling water, he walked over to his test dummy and gave it a swing. As the sword hit the dummy (as it was not sharpened yet), the dummy began to freeze. This was his first enchantment. After trial and error, he learned that he could enchant both things he made, and also things he did not, although the enchantments on things he made were 100x stronger.
