Rushing down the path, hand on top of head, Keiru entered the magic building, turning down a hallway to her classroom. She opened the door into a room filled with desks and chairs, and students chatting away. Near the back, her horse parts curled up on the ground, was Ceres at her desk. She beckoned to Keiru, who sat down on the desk next to her. “Hey Ceres. Sorry I’m late!”
Ceres turned and smiled. “Not at all. You actually arrived on time! I was worried that I might be late for class, what with me losing the top of my head and all. Say, why is the teacher’s desk so big?”
Indeed, the teacher’s desk was a slab of mahogany that looked like two men could lie comfortably down on it. Papers were strewn everywhere, and two cups, one filled with shelled walnuts and the other with dried meat, stood on the left side of the desk. On the right was a cage in which four rats could be seen scurrying. “Odd,” thought Keiru.
Suddenly, the door to the classroom opened. To the horror of the students, they saw a fearsome beast emerge. It was at least eight feet tall, with a lion’s lower body, muscular and sleek. Its massive wings were folded on its back, and it had fearsome hawk talons for hands, which looked like they could eviscerate someone in an instant. Its head was that of a gigantic bird of prey, with… glasses on it? It was also wearing a nice robe, and a pointed hat that just screamed “wizard.” It took off its hat, and started to address the class. “Ahem. Students, welcome to my humble classroom. I’m Mr. Griffith, and I will be teaching you this year on the wonders of magic.” Staring out at the silent classroom, he cawed quietly in amusement. “What’s the matter? Haven’t ever seen a griffin before?” With a faint pop, he removed the top of his feathered head, exposing his wrinkled, wizened brain. “But don’t worry now. My mind is 100% human, as all of you are. Please, remove your tops now. We’re all of age here, and you all must get used to going around with your brains exposed.”
The classroom seemed to come alive with squelching pops as everyone in the class pulled off the tops of their head. Keiru stared at Ceres’ cute little brain, seemingly firmer and more resistant to the faint pulsing she saw in the others.
“Ah, that’s better. Now, before we begin, who here isn’t human?” A few hands shot up- some dog-furred and dog-muzzled, some with horns and hooves, and two centaurs, Ceres being one of them- and one with grey fur, a long wormlike tail, clawed hands, and the face of a rat. “Yes, you in the front, the rat person- what’s your name again?”
The ratman smiled. “Rhett.” “Well then, Rhett, can you explain why so many people here don’t look like humans?”
Rhett coughed, and began to answer the question. “Well, that’s because of brain transplants. When the human brain is put into a body that’s completely different, it changes the body to be more similar to the baseline human form. This is because the human brain is one of the most powerful sources of magic, and the brain works on a subconscious level to make sure its body can be used properly.”
“Well done, Rhett!” Griffith exclaimed. “Many of you here are using bodies that you were transplanted into. Centaurs result from a human brain donation to a horse or pony, orcs from a human brain into a pig or boar body, lupins from a human brain and canine body, ratfolk from a switch with a giant rat, and minotaurs from a human brain in a cow body. For some reason, cat-human brain transplants result in the creation of elves, and giant moles and badgers turn into dwarves when a human brain is transplanted into their heads.” Poking his brain appreciatively with a talon, he continued. “Because of obvious size limitations, a human brain either must be in its early developmental stages or magically shrunken before being placed in an animal’s cranium. Most animal-human transplants are done to save the life of a baby or young child, though it isn’t that rare for these operations to be done as part of a custom or tradition. Oftentimes, the sex organs are transplanted as well, so the transplantee can give birth to human children.”
The minotaurs, ratmen, centaurs, satyrs, and lupins looked around nervously- except for Ceres and Rhett. They seemed to be… relatively nonplussed, as far as things were concerned. Ceres turned to Keiru, whispering. “I was actually around two when I was made into a centaur. Long story short, my old body was pretty much pulped by a thoroughbred pony, my parents didn’t feel comfortable with it around but didn’t want to kill it, a trip to the surgeon later, and here I am right now.”
