I'm an accounting major, and my plan is to work towards my CPA before starting my own business. But recently I've gotten some networks into financial planning, and it's certainly a tempting offer. But I don't really know about financial planning; it might be worse than accounting. I'm hoping to make delusional amounts of money, so it would be a bad idea to devote time into a career that isn't profitable.

Do you guys know anything about this field? Would a financial planning startup be scale-able into a large company? Is it a good way to transition into a better paying field?

Thanks in advance.

there are two sides to the finance industry, sell side (sales) and buy side (investment management)

almost everyone starts off in sales. if you can prove your worth then someone higher up in the company will promote you to management. You'll make good money on either side though.

Accounting doesn't involve sales, your starting pay may be better but there's definitely more room for salary increases in finance.

tl;dr go into finance if you're okay selling insurance/investment products/whatever the latest banking ponzi is (hello student loans). having weak/no morals will help.

i dunno much about startups but starting one without any experience in the industry is going to be difficult. it'd be much wiser to start the first few years working for Fidelity or vanguard or whomever until you can prove yourself, then you'll likely get clients and referrals. you may as well start a pawn shop/loan business if you think other people will give you money without any history.

This was about financial planning as a specific subsection of finance, and its validity as a career. I was already planning on transitioning out of accounting and into finance.
