I believe this is in reference to a common theme in many DC characters. For example the joker even when basically told who the batman was didn't care. He only care about batman when he put on the mask. I believe Nolan is referring to the fact that who we think the man is behind the mask is often nothing like what we imagine. In the joker's own words "why spoil all the fun."
