I buy the big bags of rice and oats occasionally to top up the drums in my cupboard. I've got a $10 dollar a day budget for food, so no takeaway unless I'm flush or I've got coupons. Got 2 pizzas from dominoes about a month ago. Inhaled the first one before I got home, started on the second. Finished the second off with no trouble. Would have been better off buying frozen pizzas instead, but it was Tightarse Tusday and I thought I was getting a good deal.

I do tuna bake once a week and add stuff from my garden, or mixed frozen veg and half a tin of corn. Good for 2 huge meals or several smaller ones. At the moment I'm putting in leeks and beans from my garden, a while ago I was adding field mushrooms and parsley I picked. Similar for pasta sauce, cherry tomatoes, leeks, mushrooms. whatever. Or I use white sauce to make a potato bake and have it as a side with snags or rissoles, along with tinned corn (put in microwave for 45 seconds) and frozen veg or shit from my garden. I grow spuds, but I still buy them on occasion. Any leftover potato bake is snack food, or is reheated for the next night. If I don't feel like doing some proper cooking, I heat up a tin of baked beans as a side for a fry up, boil some noodles or put a frozen pie in the oven and have it with leftovers.

I'm not giving bargain basement meat prices, but you can get decent mince for $8-10 a kilo, chicken breasts on special for under $10 and I'm picky about sausages and want more meat than breadcrumbs. Mid range bacon with the rind on, is half the price of bacon from a butcher and I don't feel bad about freezing it.

If you can't afford to eat properly you need a change in lifestyle or to hit up Vinnies, or something. Or you're paying too much for rent, in which case I suggest the rice and noodle diet, complimented by bin diving.

That sounds pretty nice. I sort of already know how to make a white sauce but I use the pre made ones in a jar as they just reduce the prep time. The dolmio ones are pretty good and taste good enough for me, I might try experiment with putting different ingredients in it, tuna bake is pretty nice though.
