>Language seems to 'evolve' by non-genetic means, and at a rate which is orders of magnitude faster than genetic evolution.
>By comparing the songs of fathers and sons, Jenkins showed that song patterns were not inherited genetically. Each young male was likely to adopt songs from his territorial neighbours by imitation, in an analogous way to human language. During most of the time Jenkins was there, there was a fixed number of songs on the island, a kind of 'song pool' from which each young male drew his own small repertoire. But occasionally Jenkins was privileged to witness the 'invention' of a new song, which occurred by a mistake in the imitation of an old one.
>Song in the saddleback truly evolves by non-genetic means. There are other examples of cultural evolution in birds and monkeys, but these are just interesting oddities. It is our own species that really shows what cultural evolution can do. Language is only one example out of many.
>Fashions in dress and diet, ceremonies and customs, art and architecture, engineering and technology, all evolve in historical time in a way that looks like highly speeded up genetic evolution, but has really nothing to do with genetic evolution.
>As an enthusiastic Darwinian, I have been dissatisfied with explanations that my fellow-enthusiasts have offered for human behaviour. They have tried to look for 'biological advantages' in various attributes of human civilization. For instance, tribal religion has been seen as a mechanism for solidifying group identity, valuable for a pack-hunting species whose individuals rely on cooperation to catch large and fast prey.
>Kin selection and selection in favour of reciprocal altruism may have acted on human genes to produce many of our basic psychological attributes and tendencies. These ideas are plausible as far as they go, but I find that they do not begin to square up to the formidable challenge of explaining culture, cultural evolution, and the immense differences between human cultures around the world
>I think that a new kind of replicator has recently emerged on this very planet. It is staring us in the face. It is still in its infancy, still drifting clumsily about in its primeval soup, but already it is achieving evolutionary change at a rate that leaves the old gene panting far behind.
>Probably it originated many times by independent 'mutation'. In any case, it is very old indeed. How does it replicate itself? By the spoken and written word, aided by great music and great art. Why does it have such high survival value? Remember that 'survival value' here does not mean value for a gene in a gene pool, but value for a meme in a meme pool.
>Some of my colleagues have suggested to me that this account of the survival value of the god meme begs the question. In the last analysis they wish always to go back to 'biological advantage'. To them it is not good enough to say that the idea of a god has 'great psychological appeal'. They want to know why it has great psychological appeal. Psychological appeal means appeal to brains, and brains are haped by natural selection of genes in gene-pools. They want to find some way in which having a brain like that improves gene survival. I have a lot of sympathy with this attitude, and I do not doubt that there are genetic advantages in our having brains of the kind that we have.
>The old gene-selected evolution, by making brains, provided the soup 1 in which the first memes arose. Once self-copying memes had arisen, their own, much faster, kind of evolution took off. We biologists have assimilated the idea of genetic evolution so deeply that we tend to forget that it is only one of many possible kinds of evolution.
>The memes are being passed on to you in altered form. This looks quite unlike the particulate, all-or-none quality of gene transmission. It looks as though meme transmission is subject to continuous mutation, and also to blending.

He explains it here:
>" Examples of memes are tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, clothes fashions, ways of making pots or of
building arches. Just as genes propagate themselves in the gene pool by leaping from body to body
via sperms or eggs, so memes propagate themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brain to brain
via a process which, in the broad sense, can be called imitation. If a scientist hears, or reads about, a
good idea, he passes it on to his colleagues and students. He mentions it in his articles and his
lectures. If the idea catches on, it can be said to propagate itself, spreading from brain to brain. As my
colleague N. K. Humphrey neatly summed up an earlier draft of this chapter:'... memes should be
regarded as living structures, not just metaphorically but technically. When you plant a fertile meme
in my mind you literally parasitize my brain, turning it into a vehicle for the meme's propagation in
just the way that a virus may parasitize the genetic mechanism of a host cell. And this isn't just a way
of talking-the meme for, say, "belief in life after death" is actually realized physically, millions of
times over, as a structure in the nervous systems of individual men the world over.' "
Saying that genes and memes operate syntactically the same way.

If an activity carried out by matter and another activity carried out by matter can be described with the same adjectives and verbs, then there is only two possibilities: there are the same on the physical level, or they are the same on the metaphysical level.
Since they cannot be the same on the physical level, they must be the same on the metaphysical level.
Viruses and viral videos aren't the same physically, but they occupy the same metaphysical "space" (this should just be called ideas, really).
The nature, i.e. the metaphysics of genes and the metaphysics of memes are the same. They both describe ways in which the past informs the present.

Then you have to look at the adjectives and verbs that can only be applied to one, and not the other.
You can't just look at the things they have in common. You have to look at what makes them different.
The nature of genes and the nature of memes are not the same. The nature of a gene is that it acts as one part of a larger blueprint, informing how to grow organs.
Memes don't have to inform anything, or act as a blueprint for anything. They can. But they can also be a great many other things.

>You have to look at what makes them different.
Why? If it turns out that genetics is just a subset of memetics, they must necessarily occupy the same metaphysical province. I could grant any number of differences (which obviously exist, like their speed and accuracy) and it wouldn't matter - all that matters is that you can sufficiently describe both phenomena using the same set of words.
>Memes don't have to inform anything, or act as a blueprint for anything.
Neither do genes, and in fact genes are full of patterns that do not inform anything.
I don't want to go down the information theory route, but once you realize that information is just any non-random pattern, the step towards realizing that genetics and memetics are really just broad ways of describing the means by which patterns replicate and disseminate should be easy to take.
Memetics was meant to build upon genetics to account for ways in which evolution occurs that genetics can't account for on its own. Much like quantum mechanics acts like an appendix to classical mechanics to increase its scope of accuracy.
aee4cb No.2269858
aren't quantum mechanics the bridge between chemistry and physics. or am I a dweeb
6941f2 No.2269859
Actually I would argue classical mechanics would be considered the appendix as quantum mechanics can be used to describe classical interactions within the context of macroscopic objectics, however classical mechanics cannot be used to describe quantum mechanical structures as all of the "rules" that govern all branches of classical mechanics get immediately broken once we consider microscopic interactions.

The idea of genetics are a meme.
All representations of things that can be held in the mind are memes.
The idea of genetics are memes; but genes themselves are not.
Genetics may be a subset of memetics, but a subset doesn't necessarily mean an equal set.
But that's a good one.
If you mean junk-DNA, the idea of junk-DNA has all but been thrown out.
Turns out junk-DNA actually informs the structure of DNA, which is very important. Don't ask me how.
>I could grant any number of differences (which obviously exist, like their speed and accuracy) and it wouldn't matter - all that matters is that you can sufficiently describe both phenomena using the same set of words.
But I don't think we can.
>Memetics was meant to build upon genetics to account for ways in which evolution occurs that genetics can't account for on its own
I'm inclined to agree, but I'd add that memetics don't actually have to do with evolution. They account for the way behavioural changes can occur on top of genetics. Not necessarily evolved, but a different pattern that can come from anything. Where genes generally are sustained by natural selection, a meme may be sustained for any number of irrational and dumb reasons. Like that OP is a faggot.

Quantum mechanics is definitely a tool in quantum chemistry, but can be more mathematical than chemical in many scenarios.
If I were to formally define quantum mechanics in terms of its language I think it would be more appropriate to call it a "bridge" between linear algebra, group theory, and probability.
Since a lot of quantum mechanical results relies on interactions within a hilbert space, I would even argue that some lie theory, or just topology is also necessary.
Honestly all of the neat and abstract structures studied within algebra and topology and analysis are "bridged" to present nice results.
Chemistry is used but you definitely do not need a lot of chemical knowledge to understand quantum mechanics.

The bottom line is that both classical and quantum mechanics are imperfect attempts to describe the motion of objects. We don't have a unified theory of the motion of objects.
Memetics and genetics are analogous to this with respect to evolution. They don't even have to be subsets to be metaphysically identical, what I said is that if they ARE subsets, they must NECESSARILY be.
>>2269860
>genes themselves are not
They don't have to be. A viral video does not have to be a virus to act like one.
> but a subset doesn't necessarily mean an equal set.
It means the subset is identical to another set in regard to each of its elements.
A subset can contain less elements than its parent set. Even infinitely many less.
The set of integers is a subset of the set of signed integers and contains infinitely less elements ("differences").
>the idea of junk-DNA has all but been thrown out
No... just no. It hasn't been thrown out, maybe you meant to say that less of the human genome is noncoding than was initially believed, but noncoding genes are using to do specific things in research, the fact that genes can be turned on and off (regulated) defeats your claim, the fact atavisms exists and so on and so forth.
Even *if* this were true, then every meme there is in the meme pool still informs the structure of the meme pool itself, and you wouldn't have really proved much of anything on that front either.
>I don't think we can
And that's fine. At the very bottom of the bottom line, memes and genes are analogous, which was your original reason for arguing over days. That culture is not inherited via mechanism or whatever. It'd be hard to not concede that point after all this.
>a meme may be sustained for any number of irrational and dumb reasons
Evolution by natural selection is a similarly unguided process. It must go forward, at any rate, because the environment keeps changing and changing. A lot of species get thrown under the bus when an environment changes back, but they can't "evolve" back. They are stuck this way now.
But overall, the memes that do inform the present are the ones that were "selected". Ideas that don't propagate well because they aren't useful to us have a tendency to die out, albeit with exceptions. Genes are no different.
I have 3 minutes left, but that's all I'm gonna add to this discussion. Discussions are over when someone goes to sleep. Stop breaking internet rules.

A viral video can be viral in a sense, yes.
A subset is literally not identical by virtue of logic, though it can be. In this case, the anon was arguing that DAWKINS THE GUY WHO WROTE THE STUFF said they are in the metaphysical space, which he objectively did not.
Memes and genes may be analogous, but how they're analogous matters.
Memes and genes informing the present are merely one way in which they are analogous. One. And they don't do it the same way.

Hmm.
I dunno if I can really agree with that.
It really depends on how you define something to be an "imperfect" quantification. The only reason it is not unified is because you just cannot treat objects of wildly different sizes (comparatively) the same once you get down to a microscopic level because they "follow different rules", so to speak.
Anyways I only wanted to clarify on your appendix example because it happened to involve of the few things I enjoy speaking about and can do so with some authority.

I do not really remember where I stood on anti-drug laws. It is complicated stuff depending on what class of drug, what scenario, etc.

I believe there are synthetic substances out there which are perfectly fine, however the ones I speak of are straight up prodrugs.
Although I think most are metabolised and converted in the liver, which is always a little more messy.
