Where I grew up, we would slaughter our own animals. In February or March you would kill the pig. It's a family event. I haven't been to a proper suhsi bar, I should probably try sometime.
What I cook is mostly just rice+sauce+meat in various combinations of types of rice, stuff added to it, sometimes sauces other than soy sauce and always a different type of meat.
I guess before that I was cooking pancakes and I still have some scar burns from when I tried to make pancakes from about four years ago, though. Those've almost faded entirely now.
Or spaghetti.
Sushi is just cooking a different type of rice and then trying to roll it up with something. Hardest part is getting suitable fish. But I still can't get the rice as nice and plastic-ey as they have at that one supermarket.
