Trump's statements on a dozen news channels about Obama's citizenship:
"Why doesn't he show his birth certificate? There's something on that birth certificate that he doesn't like."
"He's spent millions of dollars trying to get away from this issue. Millions of dollars in legal fees trying to get away from this issue. And I'll tell you what, I brought it up, just routinely, and all of a sudden a lot facts are emerging and I'm starting to wonder myself whether or not he was born in this country."
"He doesn't have a birth certificate, or if he does, there's something on that certificate that is very bad for him. Now, somebody told me -- and I have no idea if this is bad for him or not, but perhaps it would be -- that where it says 'religion,' it might have 'Muslim.' And if you're a Muslim, you don't change your religion, by the way."
"I have people that have been studying and they cannot believe what they're finding ... I would like to have him show his birth certificate, and can I be honest with you, I hope he can. Because if he can't, if he can't, if he wasn't born in this country, which is a real possibility ... then he has pulled one of the great cons in the history of politics."
His grandmother in Kenya said, 'Oh, no, he was born in Kenya and I was there and I witnessed the birth.' She's on tape. I think that tape's going to be produced fairly soon. Somebody is coming out with a book in two weeks, it will be very interesting."
"A lot of people do not think it was an authentic certificate. ... Many people do not think it was authentic. His mother was not in the hospital. There are many other things that came out. And frankly if you would report it accurately I think you'd probably get better ratings than you're getting."
"An 'extremely credible source' has called my office and told me that @BarackObama's birth certificate is a fraud."

relative to the last several presidents, I'd say so. compared to members of his own staff. compared to many of his critics. poorly educated for only attaining an undergraduate, and from Wharton, back in the day that school was known for being place you could buy a degree from.
>easily fooled
has spent decades parroting conspiracy theories without any secondary checking. his entire persona is about face value. he can be convinced a country likes him if they hold a ceremony for him. he has employed and trusted several people he now says are untrustworthy af.
>fueller of fear

>and hate
he unabashedly demeans and seeks to shame those who disagree with him. many stories about him characterize him as a bully. he is a vengeful, ligitous man. and encourages pride and anger towards his enemies during his rallies. he openly calls the media the enemy of the American people.

that you assess him on such criteria shows that you dont get what others see in him. the man is exceptionally charismatic and clearly capable enough to enact his will as president, and by extension the will of those who put him into power. the only things hes truly failed at so far are getting his wall and opposing the existing US military foreign policy, which honestly was one hell of a high bar to set.
i watched his inauguration. those who selfishly violate the laws of a nation and presume themselves entitled to the inheritance of others are worthy of scorn, as are their enablers. the media as it currently exists had done much to earn the hatred many have for it, i have no sympathy there. to my mind trump is if anything doing to little to correct the wrongs that have been done by the existing ruling political factions of the US.
I have my own gripes with him though, im no fan of economic protectionism and he clearly comes at law from a very different perspective to my own, he wouldnt be my first choice of leader thats for sure.

>the man is exceptionally charismatic
that's subjective. there's nothing magical about charisma. it's a sort of loan. people loan you their trust and admiration based on their words, and in turn they give you what you want. when then people want justifcation for their emotions, targets to blame, and a dick to suck, he delivers. but when people want more taxes on the rich, fair pay, and security for their own health, he actually does the opposite.
to Obama supporters, Obama was particularly charismatic. not so much for anti-Obama people. so it's subjective.
>if anything doing to little to correct the wrongs that have been done by the existing ruling political factions of the US
the majority are against privatizing healthcare. but he's fought for it. the majority are against privatizing education. but he's put people in charge who have spent their lives fighting for it. Are those faliures or successes? I'd call them failiures. Successes for lobbyists and rich people and bankers. He signed those bills. He ordered the deregulation. He enabled shitty things to happen. He could have said no. As a leader, he deserves as much abstract blame as he does his abstract credit.
>those who selfishly violate the laws of a nation and presume themselves entitled to the inheritance of others are worthy of scorn
well good, then we agree an actual proven criminal and enabler of criminals like Trump is worthy of scorn.
>he media as it currently exists had done much to earn the hatred many have for it, i have no sympathy there.
you're smarter than this, qt. you know there is no such thing as THE MEDIA. there is no singular enemy. those only exist in the shallow rhetoric of dictatorlike figures. in reality, and you know this, the media is lots and lots and lots of different mediums and people and avenues and greys of objectivity and subjectivity. to paint them all with a brush like Trump and Hitler is dishonest. but it certainly makes them easier to hate.

fuzzy categories, etc. a lot of large and different organisations converge along a general line, one which some scorn. doesnt mean theyre hegemonic or anything as some people seem to think, though the term "bay area moral majority" does seem to be appropriate to a certain degree and there does appear to be strong evidence of group think among certain large and influential corporations.

with respect to the media, hes talking about a selection of companies with a general agreement upon a certain set of things. this works because of the centralisation of influence within a relatively small number of outlets. with these two factors in place, with a small selection having the lions share of influence, and a general alignment against those things which he is for, he may make general claims with respect to those things on which they align.
>are you really saying the groupthink among the hundreds of thousands of people and thousands of outlets that make up the media, have managed to sync up to such a degree that they can be collectively labeled the enemy of the people?

okay, let's be cold about this. let's talk about Trump in terms of calculated outcome. we can talk about his role as a tool in shaping current American culture. after all, he is a tool insofar as most of his views are parroted. or as a tool for the lobbyists and Republicans who wanted a majority.

really, qt. you don't think this guy intentionally conflates all these outlets and generalizes them to such a degree that many of his statements overgeneralized on purpose?
>this works because of the centralisation of influence within a relatively small number of outlets
you're telling me that the mapping of influence wouldn't look like a massive bushy chart of hundreds of thousands of inputs and voices, and this view can be boiled down to a few top-down tree like structures? have you consumed any media in the last decade, qt? are you aware of the sheer volume of stories and opinion there are? you know how influence is determined? by outrage. by pandering. the more pandering and outrage inducing, the more eyes and clicks the media gets, the more influence it has.
almost all media companies have contorted themselves to some extent to the algorithms and wants of the people, and that is how the actual lion's share of strategy is determined. there are many cases, but infinitely less, of actual top down agenda pushing. and those should be called out and understood. like the Sinclair thing. somehow I don't think Trump means Sinclair though. ha.

no, hes talking about a certain set of views and behaviours, if those qualifiers apply then his words have merit, if not then indeed he is over-generalising as politicians in need of an energised supporter base are want to do.
>you're telling me that the mapping of influence wouldn't look like a massive bushy chart of hundreds of thousands of inputs and voices, and this view can be boiled down to a few top-down tree like structures?
ive seen reporters from these organisations effectively say "shit rolls downhill" when questioned on their work before. minor outlets are not the problem, its those old, established organisations that aim to shape narratives on the national level which are his enemies.
the rest of that is nonsense. influence in the form of shaping norms is something that any content creator possesses in tune with the scale and receptiveness of their audience. that is not a thing to be underestimated.
> there are many cases, but infinitely less, of actual top down agenda pushing
im not talking about that, im talking about an organic conflict of norms.

you know what? I don't think voters really know what they want. and they never have. the majority is tempermental and have views both overly simplified and flat out incorrect. most Republicans agree with the sentiment that the media is the enemy of the people. they weren't asked which specific media, or what channel, just a blanket understanding that media = enemy.
>no, hes talking about a certain set of views and behaviours
okay, I can show you like, almost a hundred quotes of him making lazy, general statements about entire organizations and the media. his frequent qualifiers are "fake", "mean", "unfair", "lying". sometimes he says why. he usually doesn't. and now you have half his reporters saying the media is the enemy of the people.
he should really try to let his followers know what he really means is to practice a skeptical mind towards all news, instead of giving the impression he LOVES media that loves him, and hates media that talks negative about him. do you think he dislikes the idea of media manipulation and top down influence, because it sure looks like he loves media when he influenecs it.
>its those old, established organisations that aim to shape narratives on the national level which are his enemies.
So what, MSNBC and CNN and CBS and whoever else? You don't think those organizations have thousands of unbiased, objective, fact based pieces? Over the decades, ranging on all sorts of topics, you don't think some reports are just, earnestly trying to do their best to report the facts?
I get manipulation can come in many forms. the patterns of the aggregate strategy of what media places put out. but he's guessing at and generalizing the intention and origins of tens of thousands of pieces. And the majority of his followers now say the media is the enemy of the people.

Trump was a retarded retard from the get go, and goes to show how attentive everyone was during voting; unless of course it was all a sortve half-joke like my mom who voted for him in a sort of madness/joke.
Most people i suppose hadnt been faced with that vag grab dominance and wanted more of it. But vag grab to such a degree you cant even make the decisions youd want to.
And now we're in a place thats probably exactly where we wouldve been no matter what, but now, it just seems different, cause trump gave the final say.
who thought he was charismatic? the women who wanted their pussy played with or the gayboys who were tryina get railed?
It was good to see someone speak over someone else during a debate, breaking up the monotony of constant assembly-line diplomacy, and that may be the only reason, for anything.

But surface level, the people still thinks theres suppose to be the trump answer thats elegant and appealing, or the trump thats failed miserably and said something so demeaning that the world is gonna explode or something.
which really, hes more likely to fail serving those standards.

plurality in a given polity vs a limited window of expression in a given political frame etc
i dont doubt that hes got a soft spot for media when it sucks his cock, but i dont really care as long as he stands in opposition to the established media organisations right now.
nobody cares about the good being done by the media, because that much is expected of them. its the bad done that catches peoples ire, because no amount of good can undo that in the eyes of those who view themselves as victims of it or who are sympathetic to them.
as for individual reporters, again, nobody cares unless they do something bad. that people do good is expected to some degree, and praiseworthy if exceptional, however bad action has a much more profound effect on a given individuals reputation than good.

>you defend his factionalism as continuing an existing political paradigm, ignoring that he has shaped and in worsened the paradigm himself.
the problem is that the flaws of the paradigm are near invisible to a lot of people, because their man holds office and fights for their vision of the good life they believe that all is right and no harm is being done. sometimes the only way to make it apparent that people are abusing their political representation is to shove it back in their face.

Trump uses a grain of truth, that some media outlets have agendas and lie, and that some media pieces have been lies, to suggest they they are the enemies of the American People and their content should be distrusted and ignored.
He blankets them. As one thing. How the fuck do you know the truth? Multiple sources, analysis, understanding. He's not suggesting any of that. He's saying don't trust what they're saying. Period. They are the bad guys. They aren't my bad guys, they're YOUR bad guys.
