The Monogatari writer loves his theme of how there is noone that's all good, no absolutes, so for every nice quality that the girls have, something must be unappealing about them. What exactly happened here? Why didn't the incredibly superhuman vampire swing his 3 meter anti-monster sword at Araragi, who was essentially just a human at this point? Instead he lets the guy close in on him and put a deadly sticker on him. Sure, he may have been overconfident, but why not just swing the sword? It happened quickly, but they showed us that he can move several times faster than a human. He wouldn't toy with his prey since Shinobu would've disapproved. And there's no way this was some elaborate suicide attempt since the vamp reacted with pure shock and horror at his defeat, seemed to want to live on with Shinobu, probably had no idea that such seals existed and laughed gleefully when he thought he was going to win. Sure, it's hard for him to kill himself without his former master's help, but the suicide theory makes no sense. Araragi later summarized the saga by saying that First One's suicide had finally been successful. I wonder if he meant that the vamp ultimatelly died due to the attempt, because if he hadn't jumped into the sunlight, loliragi wouldn't have taken his place and there'd be no need for a duel over her hand.

I feel like I don't get Bakemonogatari. Araragi is such a boring doormat-man he makes the protagonist of Haruhi (what was his name again?) look exciting, and all the girls look like worst girls. Crab in particular sounds like the least-dere tsundere ever. It gives me the impression that she just hates Araragi a lot and the only reason she's his "girlfriend" is to be a bother to him.
Their personalities are also more or less the same after Oshino does his thing and gets rid of the spirit. Crab doesn't stop being a bitch, for example.
They also have to seduce him in some way every episode, but isn't that just fanservice?
Also, the first half (at least) of Bake is extremely formulaic. It's more or less the same plot repeated three times.
It's a realistic (and not very exciting) setting, but there are no background characters at all. It's never referenced in the dialogue, so it looks like they just forgot to draw them. Madoka didn't do that, and it had a far more ambitious and fantastical art style.
Is there a point where it gets better? Or is it just about the animation, music and panties? Madoka had that, but there was an actual anime instead.

First you gotta understand that Monogatari is at its core a harem show, it may not be on the novel forms but it is certainly the case on the anime. Considering that the main goal of Araragi`s character is for the audience to project themselves on him, while the history revolves around him, the girls are the focus. Despite that he is very likable, he is shameless and self aware, traits that are the opposite of your regular harem MC, keeping that frustration that can come with clueless maincharacters nonexistent
I don`t understand why you have such a negative view of the girls by the way, much of their characterization is very subtle and implied, stuff like Crab`s despite constant abuse really values her relationship with Araragi, something she hints at by subtle dialogue hidden on a sea of goofy interactions or by her actions in various parts of the history; the fact that Cat seems like this classical diligent class president character, but deep down she has a bad grasp at her emotions, something her Cat Monster forms reveals she is bitter and resents Araragi deeply for rejecting her. This is how you write good characters, they are nuanced and operate like real people, they are far from similar.
Regarding your criticism of Baka, the whole point of the first season is to introduce the concepts and characters, besides that the only value you get from that is the final plotline of Cat`s BakeNeko, thus the name Bakemonogatari.
Finally, I don`t know what you mean by "getting better", the series mainly operates the same: side histories vaguely related to a main plot line, the stakes gets higher but the focus is still the same, that is a character development focus plot with the apparitions being essentially used as a plot device to illustrate`s charcter`s inner conflicts, padded by goofy constructed dialogues and character interactions. And fanservice.
I don`t want to pull the autism card but seems like a lot of this goes over your head, the fact that you like Madoka too says a lot about you, I for exemple find that show an abomination that uses subversion as an excuse and only exists to torture fictitious girls for degenerates to masturbate to it.

I've just finished season two and while I enjoy the show, it is a bit repetitive and the low animation quality (don't try and tell me it's a deliberate style, though its saving grace is that it is stylistic) brings it down. By far my favourite arc was the Sengoku snake god arc, which made me realise how annoying Araragi can be as a MC and how much better the show is when Senjougahara is in it.
Should I bother continuing? Does the show improve, decline, or remain steady?

The last episode gets pretty heavy with exposition, but this is my take, and Ougi's. When Koyomi saw his static reflection in the bathroom mirror, to save memories, unfinished business and feelings from being lost, he used his vampiric powers to open a portal to the mirror world and drags a bunch of purely non-physical stuff to his dimension and town. It's hard to say much about life in the mirror world since only mental aspects got pulled through. I mean, as an example, Math shared a room with Koyomi, and not with the fire sisters, which would have made sense since they were also girls, because Math regretted not being closer to him. The setting in zoku is molded by his and the girl's regrets.
