That "modern" type of office space has been shown in studies to raise productivity - people are more awake and since there is literally no separation between their neighbors and them, they can't do anything else. Like the Panopticon of offices.
Not 100% sure, but I'm fairly certain I've also seen a study showing it lowers worker satisfaction, but it's not like management gives a shit.

It helps to not try to get into a job that a billion others dream of getting into, with little to no way to make a name for yourself and with qualitative rather than quantitative standards (they inevitably descend into "good enough", which means you get replaced with a 5 year old Pajeet).
I can guarantee you, the guys that graduated Todai's Law or business courses are sitting in quite a different kind of office.
