It's unironically not bad as far as shonen fighting anime goes, so long as you're not too bothered by edginess.

I think the primary reason people dislike it is that the story escalates to hell and back over time. For example the story starts as simple-ish ninja stuff with chakra abilities, but by the end of Shippuden it's about supersaiyans and gods and magic laser beam attacks and shit. Also the eye powers are introduced as having simple abilities like seeing people's movements and chakra, but over time escalates into an OP magic superpower that can anything from setting things you look at into flames to summoning a giant magic armor golem to reverting your death at the cost of the eye.

I didn't mind those things too much personally since it happens gradually over the course of 100s of episodes, but I can see why some people would dislike it.

I watched enough to know it's one of those shonens that is padded out with ridiculous amounts of filler. The rest of my dislike comes from association with how autistic the fans were back in the day. I don't know much else about it. Also the porn sucks so it doesn't even have that going for it.

Honestly the series really shines as a slice of life and character driven plots. It fails on shounen shit with lame fights, lame twists and lame conclusions.

I still can`t get my head around Orochimaru being cool with everyone else at the end instead of being vilified, hunted down and executed. Sasuke should`ve get banned for life from Konoha at the least, at the most him and the remaining of his bloodline being contained so the Sharigan cannot be ever used or spread to other villages, as it clearly too dangerous to exist.

I read the manga weekly for ~10 years.

The second part falls apart pretty bad imo. It's not horrible at least completely but you could definitely say there's a bait and switch from the first part of the manga, prior the time skip.

Shit is supposed to be about ninjas and the art of being a ninja but like >>68945 said it just devolved into ebin power level shit.

They also never explain some of the more intricate stuff regarding chakra, like how non elemental shit works like Shikamaru's techniques, although they tease that they'll explain it later. The real god techniques of the series are seals, but they never explain those either. The last three years of the manga I'd say I definitely read it just begrudgingly.

Not to mention, I mean, Itachi probably could have solo'd Pain and/or Tobi and lit the Gedo Mazo on fire at stopped the whole thing from ever progressing but didn't so he could let Sasuke kill him and set him on the right track but none of that shit worked out the way he wanted to anyway…

I've been watching an edit that cuts all the filler, it's not great but I'm hooked enough to want to get to the end at least. There has been a few genuinely great moments though, mostly in part 1.

Forest of Death/Chunin Tournament is the peak imo.

Funny, I never watched Naruto myself, but this is the very same recomendation I see thrown around since, when?, 2005 maybe?, what has become of Naruto in over 10 years?

The recipe for Naruto is Dragon Ball + Harry Potter. Where the fantasy martial arts of Dragon Ball, mix with the minutiae of teaching magic in Harry Potter.

But that's just giving names to two approaches, you might as well call them Shonen and Training. Batman did the same in the Year One series.
