RahXephon is what happens when you bug a mecha designer over several decades to direct an anime and he finally caves for one show. He drags some jazz pianist on board to do whatever the fuck she likes and lets Mitsuo Iso (the guy who animated Asuka's final fight from EoE and GitS' shootout in the natural history museum) write, direct, and animate episode 15 entirely by himself.
Sometimes people say it's better than Evangelion. It has worse direction and mecha fights, but better music and more stable characters. Maybe you'll like it more depending on your taste, assuming you try this in the first place you won't, even if someone told you about the cake.
