Thread to archive all the incompetence that comes from official releases for blu-rays/dvds & manga. I'll start us off with one that's personally ticking me off. The letterer for the Tokyo Ghoul manga responsible for image above blames it on a printing error.
Why did they not fix this in editing? Why not reprint the manga with the fixes? Why is there backwards text? Why use the japanese word but also translate it later? Are all these "printer errors"?

The first volume of Oreimo in English is full of gratuitous Japanese words left untranslated. I remember "entryway" being left in Japanese, for example. It was "Keikaku means plan" levels, but it wasn't left untranslated as a joke. I don't know about subsequent volumes because I stopped reading the series because I didn't like it.

If actually serious about such, you might also look into what releases/regions use "dubtitles" for their subtitles, treating it more like just a "deaf-mode" for the English dub than being intended for use with the Japanese audio to provide better accuracy. Something about separate English scripts requiring a separate rating at times some publishers would rather avoid paying for, but then there's just cases like the Anchor Bay Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex bluray sets where it's hard to tell what the fuck they were thinking (all around poor quality release there, by the way; look into it if you want).
That said, I think most people would just say to find fansubs/scanlations to either read or watch online or pirate than care about official quality paid releases.

Some of the Disney released Ghibli films only had dubtitles. It was really obvious in some cases because nobody was speaking on the Japanese audio track. The first English release of Kiki was pretty shit, too. Jiji was a wisecracking cat played by Phil Hartman.
Some scans seem like professional level quality to me. I can't imagine the official releases of Golden Kamuy or Dungeon Meshi being much better than the scans.

Ni No Kuni is unplayable due to dubtitles. They include the Japanese audio which uses some English names, which then they change in the dub. So the subtitles are saying "Hi Fred" and th japanese audio is going "MARK-KUN!". It's incredibly distracting without touching how badly they fucked up the little jew sidekick.
I don't understand why games and animu mess up language so bad like this. Dragon quest does it, Ghibli does it and a lot of dubs in general. It's like the translator is bored and just wants to dick around for a bit, or intentionally make characters look stupid. Having an accent doesn't mean you're a bumbling red neck or a screeching harpy. There's things between those lines.

Pretty sure there's still at least some out there, but as I don't tend to be into the seasonal anime scene, I'm not personally sure who or how many. I'd expect the prevalence of series getting picked up for official simulcast these days (with all the problems having that short a span of time to officially subtitle brings) hasn't helped though.

That sort of renaming doesn't even make sense. Why would something like "Mark" be considered too foreign a name for westerners? But yes, it's certainly jarring when the audio and text don't match. Even a normalfag is capable of noticing a name not syncing right if they decide to play with Japanese audio. The traditionally used singular audio does a lot to mask that sort of stuff too, and most companies aren't apt to want to pay the licensing for the Japanese dub as well.

Not sure if it necessarily started with VIII, but certainly exacerbated by Honeywood's work on the game (which 8-4 has also gone on record as stating his work to be a big inspiration to them). And while accents can work with audio (and work better if the text is left as plain English as possible for improved legibility), they sure as fuck don't work nearly as well in a text only setting like the subsequent DS games, especially when not a case of trying to retain the state of a regional accent in the original. Only other excuse is something like the first Xenoblade, where NoA didn't want anything to do with the game and thus NoE had to pull from their own local Britbong voice pool, and they even had the decency to include dual audio too. That doesn't even get into the nature of either translators or editors (could be either, really) thinking they can write better than the original author, changing personalities, trying to add "wit" to flavor text, or even making ability names a clusterfuck.
Someone at Square-Enix seems to have it in their head that the "lel so fahnny" accents and such are why Dragon Quest VIII did as well as it did in the west (saleswise, I wouldn't be surprised if a significant amount stemmed more from the Final Fantasy XII demo it came with), and of course there's a vocal portion of the fanbase that considers it to add to the charm, and thus consider the additional layer of editing as required, which is of course more profit to the localization team's pockets for the same game. And that editing has a cost that in years past Square hasn't wanted to pay anymore until a few years back. Kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation, because it's been deemed a mainstay facet to continue with.
Sadly a straight, proper translation is apparently too much to ask these days, considering how so many companies tend towards taking "creative" liberties these days. Even a decade or longer back on cuckchan, you'd get enablers cropping up that would espouse the belief that Japanese penned stories tend to be "fucking boring" to read when brought into English as directly as should be, and therefore require creatively punching up and rewriting to be properly interesting and/or entertaining in a western tongue. Given that such were the same sort to consider Working Designs a cherished name in the industry, and would also be vocal in support of publishers culling elements like fanservice and lyrical openings that made particular games "too weeb for me" to them, I've sometimes wondered why they were even interested in playing JRPGs and the like to begin with. But I suppose that may have been the intent of groups like Working Designs: broadening the audience from those that have a natural interest in the desire for more sales (and of which they continue to do as Gaijinworks with their "you want a 1:1 translation? Fuck you, you're not anyone we want as a customer" policy).
And of course some of those chodesucking fans are old enough now to be getting into fan translation and the like. See the recent Phantasy Star IV patch, where the guy behind it thought the game needed more Working Designs to it.

Yeah, I'm not deriding all scanlations in the least. Just that when the proper proofreading before uploading isn't made, it's rather noticeable since it's something so simple that it comes off as sloppy to not have done right the first time. Though, at least it's easier for someone to fix after the fact (just reupload the page or chapter as a V1.1 or something), than official prints are.

GKIDS' Kiki's Delivery Service has a mix of subtitle and dubtitle because they use whatever subs Ghibli sends them, and said subs had some lines from the Streamline Pictures dub (only ones I remember were "Oh the humanity" and "fat, fat, fat" instead of "every day, every day, every day"). Plus you've got localization studios and Japanese companies with western branches looking specifically for those with creative writing talents more than ability to translate (Mato had an article about his attempt to apply to Square years ago having writing and submitting a fanfic as part of the process). I recall either NoA or Treehouse specifically stating they don't know Japanese but are happy to pretend they do when the need arises. I suppose that's when they're not using a disconnected third party generic translator for the job (which strikes me as having its own pros and cons), though whatever the case, again it could well be either the translators or editors that make such fuck ups.

It's unfortunate that in a number of cases, fan translation and subbing are viewed by actual companies in a bad light as being impetus for piracy. Sometimes because they wind up smelling blood in the water as the work gains a western interest base and want in on the profit to be had, and sometimes more simply the idea that if it didn't come over to begin with, it just wasn't meant to be. Meanwhile goons have been picked up by both Square and Nintendo in the past (probably other companies too) and exert memes and their own in-jokes as being parts of the English script.

Having a fanfic be part of the submission is probably a good idea. It shows that you can write someone else's characters. If you have to rewrite text into English from Japanese you need to understand the personality and flow of lots of different characters. If you can write a fanfic that feels authentic you're a good choice for writing official translations.
Goons are in pretty much everything. Older goons were like anons and just liked to fuck with people. A lot of them were weebs so ended up in weeb areas like translation. If I remember correctly the guy who did pokemon gen 3 got fired for using Goon memes. I don't even mind that as long as it's not stupidly obvious. If there's some NPC in a backwards town that goes "I like flowers" then I'm fine with adding in a single meme there or something to signify who it was translated by. Like how dictionaries will add a few fake words or typos on purpose so you can tell if someone else ripped off your work. I don't want them in the main story, I don't want them any where I can easily find them, but a random NPC spewing "I like mudkips" in a post-E4 area in a pokemon game sounds a fair place to put a little wink and a nod to the translator. Other wise I'm autistic as fuck and want strict translations

But that assumes the company at hand actually cares about proper accuracy in western regions to begin with. Again, I'd say it comes down to whether the company actually cares about an accurate experience for out-of-original-region fans, or just that the game is deemed "fun" and bought.

I don't mind stuff being added in translation if it's obvious the original team ran out of time. In the fan translation of Super Robot Taisen @ Bright Noah's profile is all but blank, yet he's one of the most important characters in Gundam and that games universe. They filled in a proper profile for him. That sounds reasonable to me.
The tumblr pronouns thing is leaking into every day thing because Japanese makes it so easy. There's sex neutral pronouns they can turn into Zhey zem zer shit and claim it's a more accurate translation because at the time the character didn't know the persons sex. I don't think there's much you can do about it except complain to the parent company hard enough to get it re-translated like Persona and Ys did.
With Japan opening it's asshole to the Jewish world it's going to be a weird time for translations. A lot of Western devs are now involved directly with Japanese media. Capcom for example. You also have the new form of game production where everything is a digital scan. Like RE7 they went to the USA and took pictures of everything in autistic degrees, then put them all together digitally and had it rendered as a 3d model they can clean up. If you're already going to the Western world to do half your "modeling" you're going to involve more US people in production to support that area of design. I suspect a lot of devs will learn Japanese as part of their job working with them so they may end up becoming in house translators.
It's a really weird time for games though. If Japan thinks pozzing up it's games will get it the Western market it will have a nigra on every cover and tumblr pronouns to boot. Similar to how we're seeing Netflix animes.

I'm talking about Japanese people who have actually studied to become English-to-Japanese transalators and know how to properly transalate cultural particularities into English. Or perhaps some gajin from an English-speaking language who lives in Japan and is fluent in both languages, there's enough of those.
The only explanation I could come up with is that they believe western transalators would know better how to appeal to western audiences or something because they cannot comprehend that we want the same product the Japanese are getting, just transalated into our languages.

The thing is, I have a feeling that the Japs think that westerners cannot comprehend their style of writing and need it to be dumbed down for us to like it. So maybe they think that a faithful transalation would not be appreciated by us or something. They have this mentality that pleasing the customer is the most important goal so they might care about the enjoyment of the western viewer more than about their product remaining true to its origin.
I can somewhat understand that considering that most of the media the west produces is badly-written and contains no artistic value whatsoever so when viewed through that lens, it must seem like all westerners are braindead retards who would not appreciate anything but popcorn entertainment.

It is. It makes pointless changes often for no reason, its different from all other translations. Sometimes he censors something if he gets triggered over (like at Mineta's joke at Eri), inserts garbage PC lingo like "hate crime" and recently changed the cool as fuck nickname of a character to the Nippon sound and not the actual translation ("Apocrypha" into "Geten"(which literally means "apocrypha"))
