There's something to that format. Yes, overt changes are rare, but changes to the characters can carry a lot more weight than in seasonal shows. Of course if it's done lazily with abrupt changes in single episode, then it's worst of both worlds, but I'd say it is done pretty well in this case. The show probably would benefit if the pace was about 20-30% faster. Though I can't comment on season 4+, as I haven't gotten there yet.
